Default In 10 minutes, the new hands free law goes into effect here

Now all drivers 18 and over are required to use a hands free device while talking on a cell phone while driving. Drivers 18 and under are banned from using cell phones completely unless in an emergency. I believe the first offense is something like $75.

I'm all for it, though I still think that people will still be concentrating on their conversation more than their driving

links? I haven't heard of this but it makes sense to ban cellphones while driving.

Well this is a calgary/Canada based forum. When you post things like this, usually you refer to the original place where the forum is based on.

Any cell phone "ban" is meaningless if it allows hands free devices. Its been proven that it's the distraction caused by simply being on the phone while driving and not having one less hand available that is the problem...

It's called not being an idiot, I've been driving for 12 years, 8 of which I've been using a cellphone while driving(no accidents). I agree it makes sense to ban it but this is for people who are mildly mentally retarded with poor driving skills to begin with. Even if the law is passed here I will still use my cellphone all of the time, it's like not wearing a seat belt. You're an idiot if you get caught.

^ I think we can all see who the idiot is here...in 12 years of driving you've obviously learned nothing...

Thing is, once it is adopted in California it is only a matter of time before it comes here.

A good thing in my opinion. I see people talking on the phone and driving all the time ... even with manual transmissions. Come on people keep at least one hand on the wheel will ya!

I think the law is a great idea. I am guilty myself of it, but try not to most of the time.

there are alot of drivers who can't drive normally so cell phones makes that worse.

but even good drivers no matter how good a cell phone is one more distraction, and can make the best driver even slower to react.

I just got back from NS and you know what their new rule is?!

If you're going to use your phone you MUST pull off to the side of the road...

I'm sure theres another bit about "when it's safe to do so".. but people seem to leave that part out. I came over a hill several times only to find a car on a blind corner, half on the road..

WTF.. like that is any safer then talking on the phone.... As soon as a call comes in, people just stop there car, where ever they are..I mean really. wtf..

I don't answer the phone in car unless it's critical. When I do, I use bluetooth and keep the conversation short or pull over.

What I hate is people (mostly chicks) who follow to close with cell phone in hand for over 10mins and almost rear end me a few times.

it's not talking on the cell phone that causes accidents.. it's when you see people texting that you really shake your head.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

I totally agree. I spend between 6 and 8 hours a day in a vehicle and constantly text/pin/e-mail/talk. I've become so used to it that it is not a distraction to me at all. Even on a motorcycle I use bluetooth with 2 ring answer on. I take well over 100 calls a day on my cell phone and driving while talking is no distraction to me at all. It's the same as everything else, once you get used to it, it's easy.

same as 1 beer, you don't notice the difference but there is one, even if it is 1/100th second slower reaction there is a difference. but very un likely to have a problem
