    Default car window question

A good friend of mine got some tickets last night for

    1. 5 point harness instead of normal seat belt
    2. exhasut
    3. tires protuding out the side too far
    4. burnt signal light, and burnt out plate light
    5. lexan windows

the question is about the lexan, the front windshield is still stock glass, it is just the rear hatch and side windows that have been switched to lexan...is that actually illegal?

the other problems will be fixed, there will be flares made to keep the tires covered, exhaust will be taken car of same as the lights will be fixed.

after spending all that money on lexan windows he doesn't want to put it back to glass again

The 'Vehicle Equipment Regulation' doesn't say anything about windows or their material. However I'd imagine the glass has to be DOT approved. I know T-Fal windows have a sticker for off road use only.

I think your friend should have been nicer to the cop.

he was very nice and respectful

the cop actualy told him he wasn't going to tow the car because he was a "nice kid" which I find funny he is married, responsible, he doesn't even swear.

but of course this happened in foothills industrial where the cops are giving out tickets apon tickets probably just to break up the gathering there.

he is the one with the omni with the big front mount intercooler posted in one of the pic threads from race city

he made his own windows, so no etch or sticker claiming off road use only

    edit:
this car exactly how it sits in the pic is how it is now

Section 70(8) Under Vehicle Equipment regulations states the following:

A windshield, side window or rear window in a motor vehicle must be made of glass unless another glazing material is prescribed by the American National Standard.

Cant break those to extract passengers if it should be involved in a crash on public roads.

That car is not for public roads.

what about the harness' are they completely illegal or do you just have to have a regular seatbelt as well?

Harnesses are generally not inspected and regulated under the Vehicle Safety Act of Canada.

    Sec. 77(c)(iv)
meets the standards prescribed under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Canada) and the regulations under that Act.

Belts must carry DOT certification, and from what I know, the only aftermarket belt is the Schroth 3 or 4 point Rallye.

Also, modifying the vehicles harness mounting points is illegal.

This is why it always says "For Off Highway Use Only" on pretty much every after market "performance" part for your cars.

well that clears it up thank you.

and for the harness as long as you have the stock belt in the stock location to use on the street the harness will not be questioned for just being installed
