Anyone know what the best general use laptop for under $1000 is right now? I'd do the research myself, but don't have much time before I have to pick it up, so if anyone else knows, I'd appreciate the help.

What's general use?
What are you looking for, size? tech? tablet?
Are you looking for 24hr turn around service or can you stand the 2-3 weeks turn around on standard warranty?
Can a $400 Netbook do the trick?
Turn around is of no consequence, 15" give or take screen size. I don't know much about netbooks, are they good?
I'm just looking for something that can surf the net, play older games, and dvd's with no problems.

just go to www.memoryexpress.com and search through the computer for one <1000, I absolutely love my asus, its a good chunk over a grand might I add, but if its basic games/dvds any 15'' they sell around 800-1000 would be more then sufficient...
here is a quick example of a decent one, its the new model for asus as well, more then you need

If you want absolutely lowest price with basic functionality (word processing, net surfing, light media playing, but THAT'S IT) then the eee notebooks are wonderful little things.
But, as colinxx235 said, just look online, find one you like, call MemEx and ask them about it (they are really good over the phone, at least that is my experience)
Memex laptop's are overpriced. If you just need a basic laptop, 15" screen, dual core processor, dvd player, 2 gigs of ram, you could get one from dell for easily under 700.

Problem with that - Dell's are absolute crap, and I would not touch one with a 10-foot pole!
The only laptop brand I really trust is Lenovo...although their prices are a tad higher. After Lenovo, I'd go HP.
Just don't get a Dell. ANYTHING but a Dell!
dual core processor FTW,.. careful with dual core AMD's,.. they run super hot,.. already burnt out my MB and had to send in for service,.. I have an HP tablet 14"

Lenovo's are solid and everyone can get epp so it's actually quite competitive in price.
Dell and HP are in the same league comes to reliability. But with the way laptop get used, I have not seen a consumer line laptop last more than 2 years without any sort of problems.
But there are always deals from Future Shop/Bestbuy if you want deals on HP. Just a few weeks ago, they had very beefy laptop with Vista Premium for $599 and it's a mid-range type unit and media center remote.

What about Fujitsu? Costco carries a bunch of them. Any quality issues with them?

What exactly is wrong with Dell? They must be doing something right to be the number one selling brand in the world.
Actually HP is, but that's besides the point.Originally posted by A790

Just because they are right up there doesn't necessarily mean that they're doing something right on the hardware side. In fact, I find their hardware (especially desktops) to be crap. I'm not gonna get too into it here, but it's actually very simple why they are so big: their business model. They make it easy for people to get computers, and they expanded well into the corporate side.

For what you're wanting, that sounds like more than enough.
I've had an HP pavilion myself for almost 2 years now with 0 problems. I would buy another should I need to upgrade.

i've had 3 experiences with dell now and i don't mind dell so much but lately after pricing they don't seem too attractive
open up BB, FS, memoryexpress, select notebooks under 1000 and sort by price, then compare. there shouldn't be much of a choice or selection if you do a side by side comparison.
u really want to lug around a 15"?
As much as Dell's are a Dime-a-Dozen, I have never seen one that has died due to hardware failure. My family has owned over 6, and have never had a power supply, or hard drive, or anything go. Even if it did, their warranties are great. I guess everyone has their own experiences though.
What's your guys thoughts/opinions on LG laptops?
Just do not buy anthing with an ATI card in it. My laptop has caught the "ati2dvag" bug, and it's practically useless now.
My Dell Vostro 1500 has been rock solid for over a year now and I use it daily.
Still looks and functions like new.
Whatever you buy just make sure you get a screen with a resolution of 1680x1050.
Most of the retail grade laptops still only have a resolution of 1280x800.
Ended up going with a MSi Wind, didn't even know about netbooks before. Thanks Xtrema.
