Default Skype in cahoots with Chinese government

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/02/te...1xnzpruwiUGKKg

Despite denying it, Skype is providing surveillance to the Chinese government. Well, more specifically, TOM, an HK company who partners with skype in China is responsible for logging of filtered messages. Skype (in more recent press releases than the one I linked) has claimed that it knew messages would be flagged/censored but not stored.

Chinese residents have to use the Skype-TOM interface instead of the international "normal" version....but of alarm is that foreigners who use the normal version but talk to someone using Skype-TOM will also have their messages flagged and stored, along with personal information etc.

The news articles cite a 2005 incident where Yahoo quite cheerfully helped the police arrest a political dissident by providing them his webmail logs.

Alot of major companies, Yahoo, cisco, microsoft, etc all go out of there way to "help" the Chinese government as an effort to break into that market... and unfortunately go largely unpunished for it...

Why should they get punished for it? They want to operate in China they have to abide by Chinese law.

They should get punished for not letting the users know that they are handing over all their info (from both parties) to the Chinese government. This could mean serious prison time (torture and convenient accidental/health related deaths) for the many dissidents in China.
Also, Chinese law is very fluid... it can be made to fit any situation if need be. You could be talking about the past and how things were with your family and life, and the next thing that happens is, you go to prison and disappear on charges of leaking state secrets. No one wants to inadvertently get their relatives put in prisons just for mentioning key words like Tibet, Dalai Lama or bad milk!!... lol.

How can we know the truth if no one can tell it?
