Default Bodywork need a quick questions answered

Ok so ive completed rust removal stage 6 on my ae86 , all the old rusts spots are now down to bare medal and sanded fairly smooth other than some pits fom the sandblaster..now in order to prevent the metal from rusting under the paint once painted what do I cover it with? Do I spray the bare metal with some self etching primer then bondo or do I bondo on bare metal then smooth and prime? thanks for the help

i was talking to my friend who did the work on my rear quarters. he said after he sanded down to bare metal he applies a special primer... may have been acid primer? and then lays the color and clear. make sure there is no rust inside the quarters as well.

edit: sorry i didn't answer your question. i'm not sure if you bondo then prime. i think you need something on the metal before the bondo to make sure it adheres well.

you need to use a rust converter on all the bare metal. that converts the remaining rust (cant see) to black primer. then use some sort of etching primer on the bare metal.

If the rust is gone then you can start with the putty. Make everything smooth and then primer. If you have a few spots that are particularly bad, there is a product called all-metal that can help you out. It is a putty that basically takes the place of rusted out metal. Its not really good for big holes or anything, but for rust pitting and even pin-holes its perfect. I used it on the window corners on my microbus and havent had any problems yet (painted 1 year ago august)

As for the backside. If you prime it make sure to paint it as well as primer over time obsorbs moisture and it will rust again. So make sure you seal the backside. A layer or 2 of paint then rockguard wouldn't hurt. All that can be done with spray paints as its on the backside of the panel so a PRO- job isnt nessisary. Unless you want to pay some dollars to paint the inside of you panel.

Try and find a product called "rust-mor" by SEM. IT stops the rust thats you can not see. Its takes 2 coats with 24hours cure time in between each coat. If you can not find any let me know and ill hook ya up with some. Then follow with etching primer ect...
