Default 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Automatic V8 Transmission Issues...

When driving, the transmission holds 2nd/3rd gear much longer than it should, basically feels like it gets stuck, if you get off the throttle and encourage it a little, it makes the shift, but isn't very smooth. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

cheak the tranny fluid level.. might be low so not enough oil to make the gear change

Pickup screen could be clogged. How many km's on the tranny? Has the fluid ever been flushed and the screen replaced/cleaned?

No idea, mint exterior and interior, this is the only issue its having... it's mine in a couple days so I'll give those a try, AFAIK its 200 000kms on everything. Not bad for $400....

    Damn

it needs a new tranny filter and fluid asap!

generally in jeeps its every 30-40K to change all the drivetrain fluids including trannies

also check the kick-down cable,.. make sure it's attached to the T-cable at the TB.

Im on my 8th Jeep and I have had this problem with a few of them. For all of them it has been low/old/burnt trans fluid. Do a fluid change with screen and make sure you clean all the metal shavings and film off of the magnet in the pan. I also recommend a transmission additive for the higher kms. ( I used slick 50) Its a fairly easy job to do. Just make sure you torque the bolts on the pan properly and check them after a few weeks as it will start to leak. Make sure to remove all the old gasket off the pan...

Does it do it every time or only the first few shifts? Having worked at a Jeep dealer for the last 17 years I've seen numerous things. Always check the fluid level, running in neutral. The kickdown cable is next, make sure it's adjusted properly and not binding up, make sure the spring is attached at the transmission end. After that it could be an internal problem. The front clutch piston will score up and the seal gets hard, also have had the front band loosen off enough so it skips 2nd gear and feels like it's hanging up. Let me know when this happens and we can go from there.
