Default question about ebay members emailing you

ok, so say you're bidding on something, everything is fine and dandy. then you get emails from members saying they have the same item for sale at lower prices, usually from overseas.

so, are those just basically scams? or has anyone really done that and gotten that item?

I've done it a couple of times, never overseas though.

Everything that we need is either in Canada or the US anyways, why not buy it from here?

They are either scams, knock-offs, or stolen goods. Sometimes all three.

I'd stay away, its just really easy to get ripped off.

However when I sell something on ebay, I usually sell it by the same method.

ya I almost did that but then I think the guy was trying to scam me. I don't know I like ebay because there is buyer protection. I recommend using ebay to buy it and not out of ebay stuff especially when overseas!

I don't see what the big deal about buying something online. Pay with your credit card through an online service such as paypal and you as a buyer are just as safe as if you bought something from the mall. If you don't get your items as promised, or not at all, you have two options.

    1. Contact paypal and let them know of the situation, and it can be fixed (payment returned).

    or

    2. Contact your credit card company and cancel the payment.

    Its so simple.

Actually paypal doesn't help you if you are in Canada. Well they say they try to investigate...but they don't do the whole thing where they get you your money back right away and freeze accounts and stuff.

Contacting your credit card might be the best idea, but it seems like you are authorizing payment to paypal from the credit card companies perspective. I think its different from purchasing directly from an online store. Not sure about this though.

Default "EBay thief reveals tricks of the trade"

    http://www.msnbc.com/news/957191.asp?0si=-

Armed with access to these eBay accounts, Kenneth impersonates a long-time eBay user with ample positive feedback, and he approaches other eBay users actively engaged in an auction. Via e-mail, he tells them he can offer a better deal. When they bite, he slowly lures them down a path which eventually leads to a fake escrow Web page. Under the false security of an escrow service, victims wire money to Kenneth, and he disappears with their cash

    ...

“Every day it’s new morons, but the same questions,” he said. “Every moron says, ‘Hey, that’s a pretty good business you have there. How can I send you the money?”

    buyer beware!
