I know this is somewhat old / recycled news but I think it's noteworthy that GM has now publicly stated they probably won't make it.

I have been trying to increase my limit with GMAC by 5mil and I was just told this morning by someone high up that they won't be making any decisions for 2 weeks and to watch for March 17th and that he couldn't say any more.
Even if GMC stopped making cars, I couldn't see GMAC closing it's doors as well.Originally posted by blownz

GMAC definitely won't be closing its doors and that isn't what he was suggesting. The 5mil is for GM products which is the reason I have to wait apparently.
I understand that you can't keep bailing out a sinking ship but I think it would be a sad day in US history if an icon like GM were to close the doors for good. Just look at the history with models like the Corvette, the Caddy's and such. I really wonder how much the UAW / CAW and their heavy overhead have to do with this.

thats what happens when you make every last car feel like a rental
There's gonna be some real collectors items if they dissapear.

Im not even going to bother explaining this to you because you are probably the only one that doesn't want to understand what I wrote.

Or because you don't have a logical explanation. Of course a GM car is going to feel like a rental car, because most rental cars are GMsOriginally posted by semograd

I wouldn't agree that all of GM's stuff feels like a rental. Sure they do make a lot of plain, basic stuff that is rental grade (simply because there is a market for that) but you can't tell me that a loaded Escalade is rental grade. Hell, my Avalanche is better trimmed out than just about anything Toyota / Honda / Nissan makes.

Save the rentals for toyota, they belong as #1 rental car, they feel, look, and drive more appliances than any RECENT car from GM.as for GM bankruptcy is the only logical choice i see right now, they have had so much bad "sinking ship" publicity recently it could not hurt them much worse than regrouping into four core divisions and moving on as a smaller but stonger company.
they feel like rentals in the sence, rentals often feel slopy and and used, if your picking up a new car from the dealer you want it top noch, not an over serviced, already driven to shit beater.Originally posted by Eleanor

bahah
If GM can pull themselves out of this one I'll be truely amazed.
The US economy right now couldn't come at a worse time for them. With no end in sight, I dont know how they can continue operations without any foreseeable change to America's (or the rest of the world for that matter) car buying habits.

If GM does go into bankruptcy protection they aren't going to disappear. They will restructure and continue as a new company.
^^Yeah, hopefully without the UAW
Yes. But a lot of suppliers will go with them which will send shock wave across the industry. Chrysler will follow soon.Originally posted by roopi

It will be awhile for everything to be sorted out to return to normal.
It probably will also mean no Camaro for years to come.
If you mean cheaply made, cheap looking, and poor quality, agreed.Originally posted by semograd

Years ago, Chev/GM made great looking vehicles......icons in fact, like the 57 Chev, and the original Corvette.....and old Caddys for that matter.
But their effort through the 80s and 90s were lack luster. Many many ugly vehicles. (Olds Acheiva, Pontiac Aztek, Pontiac Transport....and on and on)
They got so big, they started to believe they could do no wrong. Poor business decisions, poor designs, and letting the unions have too much power.......

Last time I walked past a rental car lot there were more Toyota's for rent then GM vehicles.Originally posted by Eleanor

Honestly people need to get it out of their head that GM cant make a good car. Corvette, CTS, Lambda Base. They are all great vehicles. Nobody seems to recognize that...
