All I can say is this should show people what DOES work in Canadian justice. No way this guy would be seeing this kind of sentence here.

But I see a lot of people on here look at people who commit terribly violent crimes, who aren't in a right state of mind, and say "why is he not locked up for the rest of his life?" It's because if you lock them up, you have to lock them all up. That's how a precedent system works.

So I'd judge my response carefully here. It sucks for this guy, because Texas says if you commit a felony, you go to jail. Here, it sucks for the victims of violent crimes committed by insane people who spend life in a hospital and maybe even get released.

Where do you draw the line?

Hopefully the appeal courts catch this.

If I kill your wife, or a blind indian (on welfare, who sniffs gas, who has been beaten by his father all his life, who has a pregnant 13 y/o girlfriend who is giving birth to a child with Downs) kills your wife for what ever reason, we both have committed the same crime. Does he not deserve the same punishment? This indian sure did get the short end of the stick, but tough luck. Pending circumstances we both very well may deserve to die for our actions. Just because one person is at disability in society doesn't grant them immunity from punishment. I see this case in the same light.

Justice in Canada is an absolute joke. We turn everything to fucking gold, and refuse to see that there are some truly fucked up people out there. A rapist can be out of jail in what... 10 years? Pull that shit in Texas, and you aren't getting out.

I don't think your comparison is really that accurate? The indian in your story would obviously know the difference between right and wrong in the case of murder. The 18 year old who is being sentenced has an IQ of 47 and can't even read, write or speak properly.

Not saying he shouldn't be punished, but punished as a mentally stable adult? Especially 100 years? Too far, IMO.
Some people are funny. They spend money they don't have, to buy things they don't need, to impress people they don't like.

People like you actually exsist? I have been living in Canada top long.
What the kid did was effing wrong, and horrible. but for fuck`s sake when a puppy does something wrong (That would be equally bad for a puppy) Do you lock the damn thing up for the rest of its life?
Furthermor, what are the chances this kid would live long enough to see outside prison? May as well kill the damn thing if you wanna be harsh like that. Why do you want some handicap who can't figure right from wrong or read or write or talk eating up your tax dollars? Seems pointless.
While the punishment fits the crime, there are circumstances where it does not apply.
All I can say is only in Texas, only in the USA. I am not saying our system is perfect, but at least if this kid got this sentence in our prison he would get a field trip to a damn museum.

With an IQ of 47, he could've been coerced into a confession and we wouldn't even know. I'm not saying he's innocent but 100 years is way too long of a sentence.

I don't understand how he's able to plead guilty much less stand trial if he's that mentally incompetent.

100 is for media to sensationalize the story.

Concurrent would be most likely but that's still like 30yrs.

You are kidding yourself if you think he won't emotionally fuck up another kid for life if you let him out.

    ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY

You nailed it. Put him away forever.. It would be better to have him in a mental institution, but since they don't have that, Jail will have to do.

Here in Canada that fucking waste of skin Vince Lee who beheaded that guy on the bus is already up for a conditional release...

I don't care how mentally disabled or emotionally damaged people are; if you commit a crime against another person you should be locked away and removed from society so you can't hurt anybody else.... isn't that the whole idea of jail?

Conversly I would be in favor of sending them to a high security mental institution where they can receive treatment.
i don't think anybody here is saying that he shouldn't be going to jail....just not for 100 years..
    i don't think...a normal 18 y/o that sexually abused a child will get 100 years in prison..
in canada, people do get sent to a mental institution if they commit a crime... so....
