tint ticket in BC on Alta registered car

To keep things short.

Got a tint ticket in Princeton BC (highway 3), officer gave me a ticket and said normally they make you come into a station and check to see that you removed the tint but in this case since I was from out of province he would not do that.

I went to pay the ticket in person in Vancouver at BCAA, the women asks for my driver’s license and licence plate number, realising its from Alberta she gives me a look, (as if you don’t need to pay it). She calls ICBC and asks if there is anyways to track me if I don’t pay. They tell her no. Although they ask her several times if someone is in front of her from Alberta and trying to pay it. She says no lol.

She says to me very quietly that if you don’t pay it they will have no way to track you. I walk out confused.

My questions/concerns

-Surely this is not true?
-I guess ICBC may not be able to track you but the RCMP has me on file?
-I have read in other threads that sometimes ICBC does harass people with outstanding tickets.
-She said I'm not in her system so if I give her the money to pay the ticket she won’t mark it down anywhere, thus what’s the point in paying the ticket?

Anyone have any insight into this?

ICBC only hassles you if you have insurance through them. Otherwise they have no business calling you. They don't handle tickets. So why the woman called them is beyond me.

I got a ticket from BC a couple years ago. they sent me a letter with all the information from my outstanding tickets. I paid it off just incase... if I ever come back into BC and get pulled over, I do not want to get arrested.

alternatively you can pay the ticket off with a cheque thru the mail, I think I will take this option as I'm unsure if you can pay at a BCAA location. see OP

BC and Alberta share information, and depending on what their traffic laws are - could possibly result in a warrant in BC, but I'm not sure what their laws are with regard to that. ICBC does not factor into this in anyway, so it is rather confusing why she would call them when it's the cops you have to worry about.

I'm off to Nanaimo and Tofino in Sept with an STI sporting 5% tint all around.I am somewhat hopefull the cops will leave me alone but am not expecting it.How much was your ticket?

Yup,the car came like that.I bought it in Regina.All 5 windows are 5 %. I've been lucky here in Calgary as usually the front door windows are down all the time.

I'm hoping it's not raining a whole lot while i'm there.

I wonder if the cop was looking to give you a ticket for something else but had no hard proof, like may be something like speeding. Any chance you were going over the legal limit?

Maybe call the UBC law school and ask to talk to a law student, law schools have special units set up to allow final year law students a means of applying their craft before graduation. I used this service in a legal matter with a landlord who was not keeping his end of a promise. Twenty minutes on the phone with a law student and he had a letter for me to use against the lawyer. Great service.

Doesn't rain much on the island in the summer (I'm living in Trail for the summer, but my house is in Vic). Nanaimo will be hot and sunny, but you could see some rain in Tofino. They don't give two shits about things there. It's the Vancouver police and interior RCMP that you have to watch out for.

Get yourself a good radar detector (like a V1, Escort, STi, whatever) so you have a heads up. If you don't draw attention with speed or a loud exhaust, they'll generally pass you by.

I thought that as long as your car met the standards in the province of registration you were fine. I know a ton of people who have vehicles registered in one province and havent gotten hassled simply because they are in compliance with their provinces regs.

ICBC is pretty wierd when it comes to tickets..when i lived out there i had a car registered out of calgary under my mothers name. found out by getting pulled over the reg was canceled( thanks mom) and got a ticket for an unregistered vehical..

So the officce asked where id like my car towed..i was like "huh" so i guess if you have money on you or a CC you can get the car towed anywhere you want thats pretty sweet.. Back back to the ticket.. a year later i go to change my licence to BC and i ask how much the ticket is..the lady says what ticket.. so apperently the judge didnt feel like keeping the ticket alive since i was from AB..

Law of the land. If its illegal in BC it doesn't matter where you are from.

Haha same thing happened to me, except I got off without a fine. Last year, I was in Richmond, BC. A cop saw that I had no plate on the front and pulled me over. He's like "someone stole your front plate" and I had to point out Albertans don't have front plates. Then he comments about how my windows are tinted and I said my car came like that from the US, and since my car was registered in AB, he couldn't ticket me because he wasn't familiar with AB laws.

So me thinks he can't really ticket you unless he knows for sure (i.e. what's stopping him from ticketing an American).

Untrue man...your vehicle must comply to the laws of the province that the vehicle is registered in. Years ago when I was in College in TO I drove a modded ae86 that would shoot flames, was loud and would backfire. Ontario has emissions and inspections and this car would have failed anything and everything but because it was registered in Alberta there was nothing they could do.

I have 5% all around on my car too, been lucky so far in calgary not to be ticketed on it. I have been pulled over a few times on speeding but they haven't said anything.

Is it just me or am I seeing WAAAY more cars with illegal tints these days.. I swear 1 in every 5 cars have an illegal tint, whereas before, it was quite rare.

There is a difference between what is considered illegal, and what would keep a car from being registered in a particular jurisdiction.

For example - Vancouver has Aircare. If you register a car in Calgary, you're allowed to drive to Vancouver even if it wouldn't pass aircare. However, you could not register it in Vancouver. If one speeds in another province, they are still breaking the law and subject to penalty. Using your own example: You don't have to register in Ontario, but perhaps having shooting flames is still considered an offence while you're in that province. Another example: A tractor trailer travelling from Alberta to BC gets stopped for an unsecured load. Driver CAN get fined under BC law for such an infraction; they are not exempt just because their vehicle is registered elsewhere.

Vehicle rules are governed provincially, and all vary to some degree. I suspect the requirement for following rules such as tint (or flaming exhaust) would differ from province to province, depending on how all-encompassing the provincial laws are written.

You're right I should have specified modifications to the vehicle. Theoretically I could have received a stunting ticket for the flames (car wasnt properly tuned and I was a young ricer). Driving offenses as you mentioned are enforceable regardless of origin of vehicle.

Nanaimo you might be ok, but they have a traffic division like any other large municipality and they are just as anal as anywhere else.

The problem will be the Parksville/Island highway patrol guys. They run the route from Port Alberni-Long beach and will give anyone a ticket at the drop of a hat, they also setup laser speed traps at many locations.

Detector is a wise idea.
