    Default I'M ON A BOAT.....no, not THAT "I'm on a boat"

    Hey,

I want to get back into fishing / boating but I have no idea where people take their boats around Calgary. I'm looking for places that have decent fishing (from a boat obviously). Not real worried about waterskiing conditions at this point.

    TIA

    how long is your boat?

lake minnewanka! in the top 10 for trophy trout in canada iirc, one of the best times fishing on a boat i've had in AB besides mcgregor lake up north.

but seriously anyone with a boat and an interest in fishing has to plan a trip to BC, specifically anything in the strait of georgia (campbell river), man the ocean fish are so much better lol had a good fight with a few dog sharks when i went last month.

Do people actually tow their boats from Calgary to the Island? Seems pretty far for that.

Lol at the dogfish, yeah they put up the best fights don't they , especially when you're trying to get your hook back out of them with getting yourself impaled.

we goto Pigeon lake, gull lake, and sylvan lake north of calgary, Minnewanka and ghost lakes to the west and mcgregor to the south.

all of them offer some decent fishing from boats, but I like Pigeon lake the best for pike and walleye. In Ghost lake, if you can get your hook down far enough, i have seen 15+lbs lakers pulled out.

    Haven't bought the boat.....YET.

Isn't Minnewanka out by Banff? I thought you can't have a gas powered boat in a lake that's in a National Park?

^yes near banff, there is the boat launch on the south i think, it is the exception iirc, the only one in the park that allows motorboats. i think one of the top weight records in the country was that lake for a trout, lunkers nonetheless!

yeah tons of albertans there, they are also really easy to spot too, usually the only retards on their 30-40 footers going full throttle quite close to fishing boats making massive wakes, pounding the sound system.

and +1 to the dog sharks, as soon as i read the daily limit was 20 and that Mcdonalds uses them for their Filet-o-fish, i decided this is what i going to do for the next 4 hours, catch as many as i could, from the dock in Cortes Island i caught about 3, after the first one ,some guy comes up to me and says 'hey be careful, you know how to filet that thing properly?' pointing to the poisonous spine on the bottom fin, kinda said fk it at that point for those, catch and release only lol
i honestly thought it was a salmon because it fought like a mofo (lingcod and rockfish kinda just give up in a heavy sinking way haha), was a good 15-20mins, the second one further deterred me from screwing around with these things (they are even more lively out of water!) as the lingcod jig i was using got caught right above the spine on its body, pulled it on the dock, held the hook with pliers and the fish still flopping about on the hook, wiggled him off.

i did keep my lingcod and rockfish tho, no salmon at all

I've NEVER caught a salmon by jigging, every time was trolling.

edit: My mom still has the family record @ 36.5lbs, it still goads my dad

i am thinking about doing a salmon trip, but i still really want to catch a lake sturgeon.

If i come into some extra money, i want to head down to the bahamas and charter a deep sea fishing boat. I wanna catch something 500+ lbs, just to say i did.

lol....I was wondering how long it would take for the thread to derail like this. Please continue though, very entertaining. Also, anyone's reply concerning my original questions is appreciated.

    That is some major win.

On topic though, there are hundreds of lakes around Edmonton that are excellent for fishing. Should be a pretty easy internetz search.

Yep, lots of lakes in the North half of the province but simply for time I'd like to stay in the South half. Within a 90 minute drive of South Calgary if possible.

Ya, that's just fishing though. Don't really think I'd be taking a boat on the Bow River.

What about Ghost Lake? Anyone know anything about that? What about this stupid Boater Card that a guy has to have now. Has anyone gone through that process?
