    even if i still owe a balance when i cancel?

    Absolutely.

    You are going to owe some money either way right? If they (the insurance company) cancels you for non-payment you are going to have a hard time getting monthly payments for the next three years (it can be done, it just costs more). If however YOU cancel, no problem.

    It's just like a job, always better to quit than get fired.

    First off, I'd say you should contact a broker...

    When I purchased my new vehicle, everyone was quoting me 4,200 a year for 1 million liability, zero accidents, and zero tickets... About 3 comapnies said that.

    After going to a broker, she found an ING policy that gave me 2 million liability, for 2400 a month. HUGE savings!

    As for changing the policy it sounds weird... Some of these companies can really screw you over.
