    Default Downsizing for travel

I'm looking to sell the Canon XTi and 17-40 that I never use and get something more portable such as the GF1, EP-1, D-Lux 4, Panny LX3, or G11.

    What're your takes on it?

For the Panny. Is the 20mm F1.7 adequate for general travel photos, or do I need to get a zoom? Would I miss the built in IS of the Olympus?

Anyone want to buy the XTi/17-40 off me?

Haha, I'm doing the exact opposite. Selling my G9 so I will be forced to use my SLR more.

If you're looking for a G-series point and shoot, check out my for sale thread. The G9 is very similar to the G11. The G11 actually has a smaller zoom, but makes up for it with a stop to two stop advantage in low-light. Overall, both very capable cameras.

The LX3 is a very good camera man. If I was getting a compact, it would be that one.

Fujifilm F200EXR is also quite good, the EXR system on it is quite impressive, namely the Dynamic Range setting.

    This should help you decide:

The Panny looks like an awesome camera, and you can purchase lens adaptors to use other mount systems with it. That would be my pick...it's supposed to be quite a bit quicker focusing than the Olympus.

I'm looking for something to compliment my 50D, which sadly hasn't been used much in the past year due to my hectic schedule. I would be more tempted to take more photos if I can have a compact to carry around.

Anyone know what the deal is with the D-Lux 4 vs LX3? They look identical, but there's a $300 price game. Is the red dot worth the difference?

If I were to venture a guess, I'd say the difference is the lens. The D-Lux is probably equipped with magical Leica glass whereas the LX3 is whatever Panasonic puts on their cameras. I've never bought into the Leica hype.

I guess the choice of camera really boils down to what you are looking for. The G11 is a pretty chunky P&S. The D-Lux 4 and LX3 are P&S's too, but very nice ones at that and compact. If you're looking for the flexibility of a DSLR but without the bulk, your choices are the two M4/3 cameras. Personally I'd lean towards the GF1 over the EP1. The Panasonic 20/1.7 is a really nice, small lens I could see myself using during an entire vacation (I don't use teles or zooms), but that's just me.

I've been using the GF-1 for the past month and a bit.

It is really good; I'm quite impressed with it. The movie quality is awesome for non-professional applications. I like the 20 1.7 lens a lot too.

Personally, I want to also get an ultrawide lens for it, but they're so expensive. But they announced a new 9-18 or something like that which will be half the price of the 7-14. I might get that.

The best part about the GF-1 is the size. It's a small enough size that you are more inclined to take it around with you. I find I'm taking it out with me about 100 times more than I'd bring my 40D.

I've been thinking about getting one of those EP-1's, but if I were to get into M43's I'd like the 20mm 1.7 and it seems like you might as well but the GF1 kit if you want that lens.

On the other side, EP-1 has in body stabilization which would be nice for all of my Pentax manual focus lenses (although with a 2x crop factor a lot of those lenses wouldn't get used).

But I think I've decided to hold off. Looks like Samsung and Sony are both going to bring out APS-C mirror less cameras and I'd much prefer a 1.5 crop factor.

Can't find a release date/projected price on the Sony.

I want Nikon to make a compact just so I can mount the 300 2.8 to it. For some reason I think that would be hilarious.
