Things are getting messed up. Hopefully not as much devestation as Haiti. I wonder when a major one will finally strike somewhere in Canada(western or eastern coast).

Holy crap 8.8? That is near earth shattering.

You do not want to be living anywhere near a fault line this year...

2012, that was an awesome movie *spoiler alert*. They actually explained the most common geological theory for the extinction of the dinosaurs - magnetic pole reversal (although without the earthquakes and gigantic Tsunami) and massive cosmic radiation bombardment.

Yes, it would be a very prudent idea to step up the earthquake drills in the Vancouver area after the Olympics.

Side note: I've got my third monitor on California Quake duty...

    http://quake.usgs.gov/recenteqs/

But even so - they only report up to 7.0... Anything below 4 is just regular movement.

I was born in Chile, but came to Canada when I was very young. Over 90% of my family remains there and for obvious reasons I was unable to get a hold of them through the telephone. Posted something on facebook as a shot in the dark and within 30 minutes everyone has reported back fine. This thing is huge, last time I was there on the 19th floor of the Hyatt, we were hit with a 5.8. It was plenty big back then, so I could only imagine what a 8.8 feels like.

There's actually been 4 earthquakes lately, not 3.

    Haiti -> China/Russia Border -> Japan -> Chile

The richter scale is logarithmic, so it was one thousand times more powerful than the one you felt

8.8 is fucking HUGE. Btw.... this is what the south US felt from that shake, vertical divison plot:

That is in south New Mexico o_O Nice surface wave, meaning what shakes you, as well as a small aftershock a few minutes after the big rumble.

^^^^^^^^^ How to read that: the vertical numbers down the left side are the actual time at the station (New Mexico), in 15 minute deviations, the right side is ZULU (UTC) time. Along the bottom are 15 minute marks to fill in those deviations. So, reading that, the earthquake lasted, realistically, 8 minutes, although most of the violent stuff happened in the first 2-3 minutes

Thankfully Chile has better infrastructure than Haiti so this won't be as tragic.

Oz- I'm happy your family is ok. I've hear ppl still can't get through the phone lines.

They just showed live footage from a helicopter of a city on the coast, nothing was damaged and there were cars driving on the road along the beach

The people staying at my parent's house in Hawaii are under evacuation notice (they're up the mountain a ways too, I don't think they'll actually be evacuated) but my diving buddies had to move their boats offshore and load up everything from their harbour store.

Technically we're under a tsunami warning here in Victoria as well, for the immediate coastal area.

That's because the epicenter of the quake happened miles offshore in the ocean and not around any major cities.
