    Default '06 E60bmw M5

Alright, I'm not sure how many of you have driven one, or own one. I am thinking of getting an E60 BMW M5, just trade in my current car for a lightly used one. I've watched about every YT vid there is, and I just can't get convinced enough to get one.

What do you guys think about this car? Pros/Cons etc. Is there any problems with the 2006 MY compared to 2007+? (considering '06 was it's first year)

No problems specific to the early (06) cars that I'm aware of.

    Eats oil.

    Eats rear tires.

SMG isn't as bad as everyone says, especially in manual mode with shift speed set to fastest.

Very competent car year-round, just get winters.

HUD is a must-have option. Once you get used to having it, you'll miss it on any car without it.

I never had a problem, but I don't think I'd want one out of warranty.

Fairly inconspicuous, which can be a pro or con, depending on what you're after.

    It's an absolute BEAST.

Great to know it's good in the winter, that was one thing I was afraid it it being incapable of considering it's 400-500hp on two wheels, though it is a heavier sedan.

How often does it need an oil change?

I'm fine with the tires balding quickly, no problem for me. What is BMW's service like?

Fortunately this one I found has warranty until 2013

Beast of a car. Lot's of power, uses tones of fuel. Hate the transmission, but it feels like a 4 door super car.

I love 'em. I just wish the E60's headlamps didn't remind me of Dame Edna's spectacles.

They go through tires insanely fast.
Drink oil like an H22 Prelude - a lot of synthetic oil normally.
Super expensive to maintain and lots of issues with Vanos (normally) and SMG can have clutch issues. Manual transmission is more reliable.
    Bluetooth is common to fail.
Plenty of sensors can go quirky and fail, SAS issues are common.
Some even have tranny failures! If it has a good amount of km/mileage it likely has a fine tranny.

I had one for a week last summer as a demo, unreal fast car, SUCH a beast, roasts 90% of the cars on the road. CEL came on twice, but went away once.

I do love that colour, but I'm a bit biased.

I'm guessing thats the one as it has the extended warranty till 2013. If you have any questions let me know, its my Fathers car....

Not sure if you have talked to Kulu about it, but it has ~20k in extras included!!

It's not the frequency of the oil changes (20,000km), it's the appetite for oil that requires topping up.

I've never had a problem with BMW service (though many others have... that's another topic). As far as costs, my car was covered by a BMW service plan... I didn't spend a dime on the car...

Brother in law has one. Very fast for a car of that size. Lots of nice features but they are unreliable. So far, he's had to replace the SMG transmission (warranty), the idrive system, and a few other things I can't remember. Fixing them is astronomically expensive. The navigation unit alone lists for $1600 from BMW.

I'd look at a newer one with a manual transmission, from the states, but yeah, what everyone else said. Buy one, you'll love it.

I don't think I'd want one out of warranty, or keep $8,000 sitting in the BringMyWallet Fund. I think we all agree a wonderful car, one we all would want but really would not want to wake up with in the morning. As a previous owner of a BMW, I could never find a BMW dealership mechanic who actually owned a BMW... they all owned Japanese cars or a NA truck.
