The 2011 335is is here.
I mentioned this car in another thread so I figured Id post the details here as not many people know about this new offering from BMW.
With increased air intake flow and boost pressure generating more power, these engine mods combine with twin turbochargers and “high-precision” direct injection to boost output to 320 horsepower and torque to 332 pound-feet — a 20-hp and 32 lb-ft of torque increase over the 335i.
The revised engine management system of the 335is includes an electronically controlled overboost function that briefly increases torque under full load by another 38 lb-ft, for a temporary torque maximum of 370 lb-ft, which gives the Coupe a major push of acceleration at highway passing speeds.
With the increased power and torque come a number of upgraded items, including the cooling system. An additional radiator has been added behind the left-side front air intake, along with a more powerful electric cooling fan. An oil cooler was fitted opposite the second radiator.
The front fascia of each model has been shaped with large openings to allow improved air flow to the coolers — and the Coupe has traded the Convertible’s fog lights for the largest possible air openings.
A six-speed manual is standard and, for the first time on a non-M version of the 3 Series in Canada, the seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) will be optional. The DCT has been reconfigured for the higher power levels, with a choice of automatic or manual gear selection offered via the electronic console-mounted gearshift or steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.
Performance buffs, take note: With the DCT, the 335is is a tenth of a second faster to 100 kilometres an hour than with the six-speed (5.3 seconds versus 5.4). But not today.
The aforementioned damp conditions have the traction control lighting off under heavy acceleration and when powering out of the turns. Still, the Coupe knows how to hold a line, and a half-dozen laps of the circuit are all that are needed to leave an impression — the 335is has legitimate performance bona fides.
First, it gives great sound thanks to the tuned sport exhaust system. With special baffles and a unique set of mufflers, the sound generated is a deeper rumble.
Second, the DCT can make a hero out of the ham-handed. Even a dedicated manual user like me was impressed by the speed and smoothness of the seven-speed (the six-speed manual is also a delight). Upshifts are knocked off with alacrity and downshifts bring a lovely throttle blip with each change, and at no time did the back end get squirrelly under braking/shifting.
Third, an M Sport suspension is standard equipment.
The M suspension combines a ride-height reduction of 10 millimetres with stiffer springs and shock absorbers to improve the 335is’s road dexterity without overly compromising ride comfort.
As for the cosmetics, the new 335is models are based on the latest 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, which have themselves been enhanced for the 2011 model year. Of those updates, the 335is models retain the new LED tail lights, xenon adaptive headlights with LED-lighted corona rings and the new hood and grille.
Beyond those updates, the 335is gets M Sport enhancements, which include aerodynamic elements (front and rear fascias, side skirts, rear diffuser, etc.), kidney grille surrounds in high-gloss black, Shadowline black window trim, door mirror caps in high-gloss black and standard 18-inch light alloy wheels.
Inside, the M Sport upgrades continue with an M Sport steering wheel, M door sills, M driver’s footrest, M gearshift knob (only with manual transmission), sport seats, anthracite headliner and stainless steel sport pedals.
