Default 6 versus 8 (warning: Lincoln marketing inside)

So I actually saw this on the Speed network a few months back, and was really interested to see it. Anyways, stumbled upon it again and thought I would share. The jist of it is, they put their tubo 6cyl Lincoln MKS up against 8cyl Maserati, Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW in some twisty mountain roads. Better-than-youtube production quality, a killer soundtrack and mountain scenery make this worth the watch.

It was a good watch, the Lincoln did better than expected for sure. I would have loved to see a CTS-V compete.

    soooo it's a turbo v6 vs NA v8's at a high elevation?

cool vid, and production quality. still a neat competition.

as per comment on the page:

I stopped watching the video soon after I saw "12,000 ft" come up. At that altitude, any forcely induced vehicle will outperform a naturally aspirated one with similar or even better specs.

Higher altitude means less oxygen, which translates into less performance due to a weaker detonation when mixed with fuel. Basically, the turbo makes up for low oxygen content by cramming a higher volume of air into the combustion chamber.

If this challenge had taken place at an altitude at which most people live and drive vehicles such as these, then I doubt that the V6 car would have outperformed the V8s.
