Note how the only thing that beat the vette were two crotch rockets and a stupidly fast and highly modified Gemballa Porsche with 600hp.

That's not a complete list. Also, lots of variables can affect times, especially in one that takes so many minutes for a lap. I've seen 6 second differences in 8 min laptimes with F1 drivers in the same car but on a different day.
