To me, thats part of vehicle maintenance. The $500 isn't that bad considering your all seasons/summers last maybe twice as long since they don't get used for half a year...

Winter tires help with confidence while driving. Not saying that you should be overconfident and not careful. It helps when you know you can stop better, and avoid emergency situations better. And its the ill equipped people that are causing the slowdowns and traffic, but they don't realize it.

If they made it a law like they did in Quebec, the people that can't afford winter tires would not be driving: less traffic, less accidents and better for the environment since these people would be using the transit system.

I know some very cheap asians who weigh down their car instead of buying winter tires, I think the gas consumption pretty much equals new winter tires...

Took us half an hour to get to work today, double the time.

    Budgeting ourselves accordingly.

$500 for winter tires? That's freaking cheap. If I want to drive my Z in the winter, the tires will run me around $1400.

It took me 30 minutes longer than usual to get in to work today.

Highway 22 out of Bragg Creek was plowed and sanded (well, 'gravelled') - yet still some dip in a lifted Jeep Wrangler was doing 39 km/h all the way northbound to Hwy 8.

Going down the hill toward Springbank on Hwy 1 eastbound, a semi was jacknifed in the center median and a tow truck was stopped on the inside shoulder/inside lane to check it out. I slowed down - and yes, put on my hazards, because I want to get the attention of the idiots behind me - which was pointless because the next thing I knew I had some twit in a Dodge RAM trying to use his truck's model name as a verb and push me out of his way. Even though I was going 60 in a 100 with one lane of snow/ice mix.

A semi was stuck halfway up the hill EB 16th between Old Banff Coach Road and the city limits. Half in the inner lane, half in the outer lane. Traffic was going around him on the inner shoulder and he was backing down the hill at about 1 km/h.

The best part was on Stoney going down the hill toward Shaganappi. Genius in an F250 goes past me, slides into my lane, and punches it, sliding her back end sideways. Recovered, pulled back into the other lane, and gradually sped up, not paying to the traffic ahead slowing down at the Shag construction. Jammed on the brakes, overcorrected the inevitable slide, and did 3 lazy pirouettes before coming to a stop facing the right way.

On the 36 St stub between Country Hills and Metis Tr (67 Avenue), somebody got their car stuck halfway in the ditch and halfway on the driving lanes, so they just left it there. Traffic is having to alternate single-lane travel to get thru there.

Hopefully people have got their heads out of their asses by the time I have to go home...... yeah, right...

I priced it out for the jeep last year and I was going to be paying about $1600 for tires.

My tires do ok, but I also know when to park and take transit.

I was actually thinking about that. My OEM wheels are 18" and winter tires for that are about $1400. I changed my aftermarket 20"s to the OEM one's but didn't get winter tires for it. If I go steelies route it would be much cheaper, but those are damn ugly. I do check Kijiji once in a while, if I find something great. If not then I just won't drive the Z that much.

    Where are you looking?

You can get studless ice/snow tires for $540US+shipping (then $85 for tire swap here), or ice/show tires on mounted (non steelie) rims for $940US+shipping.

Guarantee thats for some 205/60r15 thing for a small car. I dont think that would even fit over his calipers. as for me, LT snow tires Oddly enough, KalTire told me I would be perfectly safe running P rated tires on a vehicle too heavy for them.

    @ Tik-Tok

I just had one of my mechanics call around a couple of shops. I was looking for just the tires so that I could mount them on the OEM 18" rims and that's around how much a couple of shops quoted him. Apparently cause they are low profile or something, they are expensive.

    That's tirerack for 17" rims. 18" rubber is $700 for X-Ice's.

You mean kinda like if they made it a law not to drive while intoxicated everyone would be taking taxis home or getting designated drivers?

Yeah same kind of concept...but it's like everything else. I'm sure lots of people don't get winter tires because they don't have to. No matter what the law says you'll always have people not following it. At least if there is a law you'll have a much higher percentage of people with winter tires on the roads. I see people with new cars on stock all season tires. I'm sure they can afford winter tires.

to each their own but personally i dont understand this mindset, cars get dirty in the winter, the roads are dirty for 3/4 of the winter season, rock chips dont only chip your front facsia..., ppl dont usually drive their nice cars in the winter, the chicks arent out walking on 17th in the winter or out walking on the street much for that matter - why do you want to look good on the road in the winter (rims wise)? thats why ppl have winter beaters, no?

Wish that was the case, but my OEM 18" wheels are the smallest I can go. Which makes winter tires $$$$$$$$. I still shell out. The only shitty part was when I had consecutive flats. That broke the bank.
