Default Prelude Gurus I have some q's for you.

I'm looking into getting a 5th gen lude in a couple months. Already did a search and can't find anything info on this generation.

What model should I be looking for? (sorry I know nothing about these cars)
    Common problems with the cars?
What shoud I be prepared to spend?
Is there a "good year" to look for or is any 97-01 "good"?
How well does this car respond to mods? (Obviously there are a couple out there who have turboed/supercharged this generation but how good of a daily driver is it?)
What specific things should I look for when buying a lude to make sure I don't get screwed?

Sorry I've only owned one Honda in my time and never got the chance to learn that much about it. TIA.

There aren't too many big common problems with these cars. Depending on what year you are looking for, you can spend as little as $13k to around $25k depending on year, milage and condition. Bolt ons don't respond too well on this car compared to Civics or Integras, but FI can solve that . I daily drive my car, and I have no problems with it at all *knock on wood*.
I would try to get one with lower km's. There isn't really anything specific you should do to make sure you don't get screwed, just use the same common sense you would use to buy any other car. Happy hunting!

on 5th gens there are 2 models, base and type sh. the type sh has atts (some really ghey lsd-wannabe thing that honda dreamt up) but it does supposedly work, but adds a lot of weight, which is why the base model is actually faster.

make sure u get a manual lude cuz the shortshift ones are slow assed.

I bought WBB6's supercharged Prelude and it works perfect as a daily driver even in the winter. The heated mirrors and heated seats are awesome!

there is only one engine for all 5th gen Preludes.
The main difference between base and SH is the transmission Jeff noted. Also SH's came with leather seats, leather shift knob, shift boot, CF dash kit, and painted moldings.
There is also the SE model that only came out in 2001 which is the same as a base, except it has leather seats ,shift knob, etc.

I thought you previously said it wasn't winter driven??? just giving you a hard time, I would seriously like to take a look at your car, as I would be interested in a JRSC for my car..

It wasn't winter driven until I got my hands on it.

It's the only car I have and I'm too spoiled to take transit in the winter while I store my car. Cars are meant to be driven right?

Its not even a harsh winter this year *knock on wood*. If I didn't already take my car apart I would drive it.

Awesome cars! I drove one for a couple years and never had a problem, except when I supercharged it lol

Anyway, you should also consider an Integra GSR or RSX as well

RSX is a bit out of my price range... I'm trying to cap it off at $20,000, a GSR is an awsome idea too I loved my Integra.

4th gens are better in my opinion, but i guess owning one has me biased.

check out http://www.vancouverpreludeclub.com for info - there's lots of 5th gens there.

from test driving them, i would suggest a type-sh if you can find one - there is a noticable difference in the handling and the interiors are nicer too. But you can't go wrong with a LUDE!!

    I would have to disagree.
I would suggest he get a base/SE rather than a SH.
With a SH there are a lot less mods on the market, and a lot of things you can't do because of the tranny.

And I have owned both a 4th gen and 5th gen, and I totally prefer driving the 5th gen over a 4th gen. But I think the 4th gen looks better than the 5th gen.

    - 4 th gen does look better than the 5th gen but i was never too fond of the 4th gens interior

I would have to agree with for the type-sh. Although it is a more expensive model, it's not the "better" or the 2 models available. It really depends on what you plan to do with your car. The type-sh is best suited for track use/autox, at least that's what I read off PO.com. The base model is best suited for lesser weight plus easier to mod (SC/Turbo) than the type-sh because of the atts getting in the way. I've read that you can't even tell the diff if you're just driving on the streets unless you take corners at 100km/hr often... With regards to year, obviously it's best to get the last year of the car than the first year of the car although I don't have any big issues with mine. IMO, the best value is 2001 SE. They were $500 more expensive than the base model, but came with leather seats, leather shift knob, and type-sh rims... but you don't really want type-sh rims cause they're like 0.3lbs heavier than base model rims! hahaa! Happy hunting!
