Default Best VOIP device for Canada?

From looking at the plans from say Vonage, I'd say they're a total rip concidering I just signed up for unlimted local and canada wide calling from Chatr mobile.

However, I was curious if there is any other stand-alone device, outside of the magic jack here in Canada that offers that type of price?

The Magic Jack, I've heard nothing but good things, but I'd prefer something that I don't have to plug into a USB port... but for the price and quality, I think its tough to beat (plus its not "that" bad to stick on the back of my desktop upstairs)

but anything else? Is there any standalone Skype tunneling devices?

    i use freephoneline.ca

it's exactly that, a free phone line

it's like $50 for the hardware, and i think $50 for the SIP file to program the hardware, (pricing may be fof, it's been over a year since i got it and i cant remember) but then you just plug in any normal home phone to it... or you can use the softphone on your PC for free.

i have 2 lines through them, one for my house, and one that i did not buy the SIP from that's just on permanent call forwarding to my sin's prepaid phone (just so we can retain the phone number)

Netgear a few others make Skype hardware.

I had a Skype phone for quite a while for LD. Until Shaw phone LD rate starts to beat Skype. Now I only use Skype when I'm traveling on either my laptop or smartphone.

I bought a Linksys RT31P2 that was used on Vonage, unlocked it and am presently using it with CallCentric. I find their service to be quite acceptable, but I was also considering voip.ms but never got around to trying them (since I have been happy with callcentric so far). For outgoing calls it is something like 1c/min anywhere I call, and I don't have an incoming (403) number, just an INum.

Tons of roll-your-own VOIP solutions out there, Vonage is actually one of the worst VOIP providers, they only get so much business because they advertise so heavily and offer easy setup.

Freephoneline has superior voice quality to a lot of VOIP providers I have tried. I typically only use VOIP when I travel though. I can tell you that voipdiscount sucks and voip.ms is decent if you need more features.

It is very difficult to beat FPL's $50 for a lifetime and $50 for your own ATA.

I think I may just have to go down this route!

check their site, no recurring costs, you just buy the ATA and SIP file from them, if you want you can port in your number, i think that's another $20, and you're done.... i set this up a year ago and forgot about it... most of the time i don't even know it's voip, unless shaw is being shitty.

I'm with Primus and for $25/month you get all features and free NA calling.

Took a quick look at FPL and I'll wait until they offer free NA calling versus a set city list.

the "city list" basically covers all cities... if you're calling the boonies, look at their long distance sister company yak, cheap long distance with a calling card.

This was the list I looked at, it didn't have USA and a bunch of provinces.
