    Default (Shell) Rotella-T 5W40 Synthetic

Tried this stuff out for the first time after reading about it on Bobistheoilguy... and I have to say it's the first time I've been impressed with motor oil. It's marketed towards turbo diesel trucks, but others have run it through the same engine as mine with no problems, and lots of praise.

I originally was a Mobil 1 guy, then moved over to German Castrol, and I feel that this stuff is better than both of those, at least for my applications.

First startup with this oil, lifter tick was immediately gone. Occasional misfire on cold start also gone. The Castrol Syntec had turned pretty much jet-black after only 5000km (service intervals are 13-15K due to monster oil capacity) and I would have NOT wanted to see what it looked like if I had allowed it to run the full course.

    Car is a 2000 Audi A6 2.7T Stage 3 (400+ hp) w/ 89,000km.

I've also checked and this oil doesn't have any friction modifiers, so it would be safe to run in wet-clutch applications. I plan to run it through the bike (ZX6) and I'll update with impressions of that as well.

not sure about vehicles because of the diesel additives but I have run rotella in all my bikes since about 2006 with no problems. wife's kawi loves it. my Suzuki runs a bit better but nothing over the top for improvement.

    Cos,

Are you running 5W40 in both bikes?

I just switched to the Rotella T6 (full synthetic) 5w40 oil for my bike and my Honda Civic.

Initial impressions on the bike - cant really comment as I just bought it but the car DEFINITELY runs different now:

    - warms up MUCH faster
    - MUCH quieter on the highway (less engine noise)
    - starts up quicker

I cant comment on the mileage since I also put on my summer tires on the weekend as well.

The car calls for 5w20 oil from the factory which many owners have found to be problematic as the roller bearings on many of these Civic Si engines were wearing out prematurely.

It is good oil, I'm not swayed one bit by sake oil such as amsoil and the like.. It could be good oil too, but its not worth the extra cost.

I use T6 a lot in many different things, and although it is great oil, I found when it starts to degrade it does so quickly.

Is it safe to use oil designed for diesel engines?

From what I gathered on BITOG forums, diesel oil in a bike is okay. In a car it isnt recommended because of the additives. Dont ask me why I dont know.

    Absolutely.

The oil yuppies used to rag on it because it wasn't jaso certified (wet clutch) so shell went and got that designation just to prove it met and exceeded it all for a fraction of the cost of the 'boutique oils'.

I'm talking about using it in bikes and smaller engines.. Although I think I will put it in the chev next change and see how she likes it.

I wish they made it in other viscosities such as the common 5W-20 but that's probably not a typical diesel grade.

After seeing an oil analysis of it being run in an 06 WRX for 8000kms (the T5 0w40) I decided to run some T6 5w40 in my car.

It's the only oil my car hasn't burned off at a ridiculous rate, so I'm pretty stoked.

    O RLY...

I guess I'll have to try it out, Mobil 1 5W30 requires constant topping up.

In S2000's Mobil1 is known for requiring constant top ups.

Now that everyone is getting turned onto it though, it makes it harder to find.. I'd buy it by the 5 gallon bucket if I could find it.

Aren't you worried about using a non vw 502 oil?
