    Default Shaw Warp, 50Mbps?

So for the past 4 months I've been using Shaw Warp High Speed Internet at home. I had the router/modem installed in our computer room on the main floor and use my laptop in my room on the 2nd floor, there is 1 wall/floor separating these rooms.

I go to Speedtest.net and it says I'm getting 16-18Mbps, I understand I wont be getting all 50 that I pay for but whats the deal with not getting even half? At the time of the speedtest the only thing I'm running is the browser.

How do I get more Mbps without moving down to the computer room?

Are you using wireless? G or N? What Mbps are you connected to your AP? What router? What speed from the computer in your computer room assuming it's wired?

Things that may be slowing your internet down include:
    1) Wireless: expect about 1/3rd of advertised throughput due to protocol overhead, retransmissions and interference
    2) Router: most consumer routers can't really handle much over 10-15mbits, especially if you're doing something with lots of "connections" like torrenting. Try plugging your laptop straight into the modem via CAT5 cable for testing.
    3) Computer: meh, prolly not nowadays, unless you have teh e-herps
    4) Sites: there's not a lot of stuff out there that has enough pipe and is close enough to you to push 50mbits sustained, try multiple sources like microsoft/apple/google/anything coming from akamai or another content delivery network (cdn)
    5) Cable: is a shared medium, so your neighbors are sucking up your precious mbits, try it at 3-4am
    6) Signal: could just be shit somewhere along the way, calling 310-SHAW they can check signal/noise/errors on your line

The only one using this internet connection is me, since I bought it for myself, the family computer is on another internet connection altogether.

The router is a D-Link Xtreme Duo Wireless N Bridge

16-18Mbps is about the peak on 2.4Ghz Wireless N
25-35Mbps is about the peak on 5Ghz Wireless N

speedtest.net isn't the best judge of speed either.

I recently upgraded myself and went to speedtest to test my new connection and was barely getting 12-15 Mbps.

However once I fired up a USENET client and started downloading I was seeing maximum speeds.

I don't think the server speedtest.net uses in Calgary is all that fast, I can NEVER get my advertised Shaw speeds when I use it, but if I use Edmonton or Vancouver I get what I'm supposed to get. I had the same problem when I was using Telus fiber optic...

    speedtest.net is broken.

For the past couple weeks or so it has not been giving accurate results. I would get like 16-18 on speedtest but try my newsgroup downloads and it would be 5.5MB/s so speedtest.net is not correct on any server I have tried lately.

You can try speedtest.shaw.ca it seems to be more accurate.

If you are sure you are not getting the actual speeds then call shaw. I noticed mine seemed to be capped @ 25 a few weeks ago so I called. They re-provisioned my account, reboot modem and it has worked properly since.

Ran the Shaw speedtest and it gives me roughly the same results(16.7mbps being the average)

I wasn't getting good speeds either. I upgraded my router to a Netgear WNDR3700v2 (N600) and installed DD-WRT... wowzas. WAY faster.

I have Extreme, so I believe it went from 15 -> 25 MBit over the past week. I found that right when they made the announcement that they were upgrading everyone, I was getting 25.
Now it's always around 15-16MBit, so making me wonder.

    I'm running a wireless G router.

it's why both companies have two very important and mostly overlooked words before the advertised speed values: 'up to'

up to 50mb/s dload, up to 5mb/s upload...

    all lies!

i'm happy tho, i have shaw hispeed which says 'up to' 7.5mb/s dload, i dont usually dip below 1.1 mb/s for something like megaupload, i think i'm screwing the system somehow or is it normal (~15mb/s constantly for dload on speedtest)?

Hooked straight to the modem with a cable, and I get 43Mbps.

I get 8-10Mbps with the router now, I phoned the Router`s(Dlink) tech support number and they walked me through the whole reset and reconfiguration of settings bit.

No change, still getting around 9Mbps, the tech on the phone told me to monitor it for an hour but I have a feeling its not magically going to improve, though oddly enough when I first had everything up and running I was getting 20-25Mbps.

lol yeah he just told you to wait for it to get you off the phone because they know their product is garbage. Looks like its time to pick up a new router.

Is your router capable of putting a different firmware on like DDWRT?
