i find it funny how ppl can 'claim' they've never had problems with either ADSL or Cable, its almost as believable as people who claim they've never had a dropped call or bad reception on any of the cellular networks.

i leave my comp on 24/7 and im on it a lot, so i notice a lot of outages that more casual users might not.Originally posted by BMPnRIDE

Cable owns ADSL, hands down.
Who wants a cap on dl/ul speeds? not this mofo.
When I am d/l'ing at 600kps you ADSL dudes are maybe hitting 100kps.
dont' u get a call if u download from shaw if u download too much (porn) stuff??
"excuse me sir, we have noticed u have been downloading 3 gigs in the past 2 days, ur slowing down the connections in ur entire area" haha
well thats what happened to my friend any way..
Curse you imageshack..
They could care less about about d-loads, its u-loads that bottleneck the network.Originally posted by YCB

I got warned last year for uploading 32 Gigs in 2 weeks time
Honestly I have never had any problems with the speed until this morning, i tried downloading something and it was going at 10kb/sec. But its fine now, i dont think i would ever switch to ADSL
ADSL is generally more consistent, ~100kps but nowhere near as fast.Originally posted by Chester

They just email you. Then you call them back and tell them there's no stated limit in their Acceptable Use Policy and they leave you alone!Originally posted by YCB

If an inanimate object or thing could lick my balls, it would be shaw cable. Some days i can't even open my hotmail it is so slow.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague.”
—Cicero, Roman statesman and lawyer
I'm on the telus system through Nucleus, and I have had no noticable outages (and I have many computers that are 24/7). There may be the odd 5 minute burp in the middle of the night but like I said noticable.
The main disadvantage to cable is upload speed. Especially in prime time. But the download speed has improved much in the last 3 years (when it was barely over 100k/sec). Also, their email system leaves much to be desired. I dont know if it's changed but you used to not be able to connect to get mail unless you were plugged into a shaw feed.
And for stability - there's a reason why you don't see many game servers running off cable. The speed fluctuates too much. Hell some leagues actually forbid any sort of cable server for that reason.
But like anything, if your Shaw or your Telus is slow enough that you are pulling hair, you have to keep nagging them till they fix it. My dad was getting 8k/sec on shaw (not lite) and had 3 tech visits before they finally replaced the modem and one of the cable drops.

Dear *** ******,
Please contact us either through email or a phone call within 48 hours toavoid a disruption in your internet connection.
As a service to all our customers, Shaw regularly monitors network traffic to help ensure adequate service levels are maintained. This note is to advise that there has been recent activity on your Shaw High Speed Internet account that you may not be aware of that is in violation of Shaw's Acceptable Use Policy.
A recent monitoring report has indicated your account has exceeded the acceptable amount of bandwidth usage, which involves data transfer to and from your computer. Excessive bandwidth usage is commonly caused by streaming audio/video, running servers (HTTP, FTP, NNTP), and exchanging large files such as multimedia (songs, movies, large graphics etc). Unmonitored use of file sharing programs such as Napster, Kazaa, Audio Galaxy, Morpheus and Gnutella applications typically results in a high amount of bandwidth consumption. This can cause slow internet speeds and poor computer performance. The guidelines for a residential account are 1GB to 2 GB upstream and 5 GB to 6 GB downstream per month. In the last 28 days 3 GB have gone upstream and 145 GB have gone downstream through your internet connection.
Instructions for reconfiguring these programs are available at the following link http://members.shaw.ca/filesharing. Making the outlined changes will not affect your ability to use these programs for downloading files.
Please phone 303-6324 or email ([email protected]) us so that we may aid you in reducing this upstream traffic or to advise us of actions you may have already taken. It is very important that this traffic be reduced as quickly as possible.
For your convenience, we have attached a copy of the Acceptable Use Policy and would be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Thank you for your cooperation.
