Default Registration question on length of registering a vehicle

So I am picking up my summer car tomorrow and I am only putting 2 weeks insurance on it. That way I can drive it around for a couple more weeks and then it can go away.

Now it doesnt qualify for a collectors plate (yet ) but I dont really want to register it for a year. It would be nice to get a 2 week registration slip for it and in the spring I can renew it in June with all my other vehicles.

Any way to do this or just suck it up? It isnt a huge deal but to pay to register something from now until June when you know damned well it wont be out in the snow seems kind of silly.

The only way to do that is to register it from now till June, then when you are done driving it for this year you can take the plates back and they will refund you for the time not used.

I do the same thing with my summer cars but my plates expire in oct. so i just let them expire then renew for the year in may for the summer.

Thanks, yeah in June I will probably throw a year on it and be done with it. To pay the $55.00 to have it sit and do NOTHING except for the next two weeks seems silly.

Good thing I live near a registry, so in two weeks just take the slips and plate in and ask for the insurance to come off then? I guess I could do that with my bike too.

They'll charge you a fee to return your plate.

It was $5 or something. I am sure it is more now.

Ah maybe I wont bother than. I know it is $5.00 but I also have a custom plate so I may just let it expire.

I'm wondering what you got as well!

Do you not have two weeks to drive it anyway - with your old registration/plate? I've aquired vehicles and used the two week rule before parking them

Okay so another question. If I were to get the insurance all sorted, can I use my plate off my truck to get it home?

    Newly acquired motor vehicles
When you purchase or acquire a motor vehicle, you may use the valid licence plate that was issued for your previous vehicle. You must transfer the registration to the newly acquired vehicle within 14 days and have valid insurance. If you are a first time owner, you will receive new licence plates upon registering the vehicle.

    Licence plate transfer / exchanges
•You may transfer a licence plate to another vehicle within the same class by completing the necessary application and paying the required fee at any registry agent office. A new plate or validation tab is not issued.
•You may exchange a licence plate for another class and put it on a new vehicle. A new plate and tab will be issued upon payment of the required fee.
•You may not transfer your plate to another person.

^^ Okay but I dont think that works for me since I am not transferring it to another vehicle. I am keeping my truck, I just want to raid the trucks plate for a few hours.

The way I read that I can only do that if I am selling the truck and picking up the car at the same time.

That is correct. You can only do it if you are planning on tranfering the plate over.

And if a cop caught you he'd probably write a conditional ticket that they would void once you proved that you had transfered it over. So not really worth the risk in my opinion.

There's a member here - Dannie that does a lot of the insurance and vehicle registry stuff. I always see her posting on how things are to be done. You might want to search her or pm her or something.

    And what did you get????

And what Racerjim said in post is the way i do it.

You only have to register it to your current registry year. Ie if it October, but you expire in December, you can purchase registration for 3 months.
