Default Anyone good at working with wood???

haha, not a porn question. Looking to see if anyone has the skillz to build me an arcade cabinet from scratch like this:

I know nothing about building this crap, nor designs to make it hold (safely) a 26" flat screen TV.

Trying to build an arcade in my house heh.

Dude if you give me the design for it I will be able to tell you if I can do it or not. If I can't do it I'm sure someone I would with would be able to do it for you.

Draw up what you want dimensions wise and send it to [email protected] and I will see what I can do for you.

Might be better off buying an old cabinet.. that is what my friends have done in the past. Alternatively, you can buy one of these things premade now, and it is awesome, but 5k USD at http://www.hanaho.com

Alternatively, I know someone who would sell you a really nice one that he never uses, and cheap. You'd just have to ship it from California

The reason I don't really wanna buy a used cabinet is cuz they've sat for years in dirty floors, bugs, cochroaches, smelly wood, smoke smell, etc. Kinda gross for my house lol.

Not looking to replicate a real arcade's smell lol.

Thats awesome, I suggest something a bit more elaborate how about going to the wreckers and building the arcade around an old porsche or rx7 sports seat...what game are you using? New or oldschool?
Looking for a new VW? How about a used vehicle? We are Central Albertas #1 source for pre-owned vehicles

MAME. Arcade emulator, so able to play like any old arcade game. Going to use either 26" flat screen TV or a 21" LCD for the box. 26" flat screen tv's are fairly cheap and should serve the purpose nicely.

Get the plans. To make it out of particleboard should be around 50-75 bux + plexi. With the 26" TV, prolly a good idea to go with plywood.

How are you going to handle the controllers? There's a company that makes arcade controllers for various systems (PS2, PC etc) - I can probably find it if I look. You can't just stick a gravis in there - the buttons alone are a pain in the ass.

EDIT: Easy to find - looks like they've gotten more popular.

Controllers are about 150 for both, and you can buy a whole custom cabinet for 1000.

I'm into MAME too, been playing it for the past 2 years or more. NeoGeo games are my fav I think for new things but I love the classics from ym childhood playing them at the arcade at Pine Lake! Have a MAME Cabinet in my future I know. Best place to start is http://www.arcadecontrols.com/arcade.htm
Great read and has many many examples of great projects. Most noteable is 1UP's case. You really gotta decide what controls you want. trackball? spinners? guns? 2 controls, 1, 4? Want a read coin door or just a coin button? It all adds up so an initial 'cheap' project can soon balloon into something way over budget! Also too many controls on a single control panel (CP) will just looked cluttered IMO. I plan to make my cabinet have swappable panels and user friendly. Maybe we could get a parts groupbuy together to save on shipping?
This is a project where the research is NEVER done, I've been researching it the past year. But if you want to start I suggest building a simple control panel to use at your computer. This way you can see if it's over your head or what (you can build one for under $50 easy with a keyboard hack and some buttons/joys from ebay). It'll also give you ideas on if you like the button layout and other such things. HTH
Lovin' my new ride but I miss my old yeller CRX. :'(

hehe I'm looking at building 2 cabinets. The first (tough one) is a 2p arcade style cabinet. Mostly for the Street Fighter series of games. I grew up on and was hooked on SF2 and later games, most notibly the original with the Guile glitches.

The 2nd cabinet is the easy one, I'm replacing my old 53" big screen, so instead of selling the 8 year old TV, I'm going to build a stand up cabinet that's 8 feet away from the TV, with 4 player controls. Going to use that for games like TMNT, Simpson, etc.

MAME rules, I've been playing it for quite some time now myself. I've always dreamt of buying SF2 original at home, mame makes it 1000x easier and cheaper to own arcade classics. Not to mention u can switch games easily hehe.

there are tons of companies that build the cabinets like those... and have the 26" arcade screens in them too which (IMO) look much better than a TV or computer monitor

i probably spent a fortune on the original SF2... and then Mortal Kombat...

i found that later iterations of the game just werent the same in terms of fun

Nah, MAME's been around a lot longer than maximum PC .

I was playing MAME games on my laptop on my flight, and explained to the wife how cool it was to build a full cabinet that looks like an arcade. And she says it's a good idea so I got permission to build one haha.

i think maximum pc and mame are about the same age... however... this goes back to when maximum pc was called "boot"

i still have a copy of one where they were predicting what DVDs would be like... and it had a review of a beta version of BeOS running on a BeBox

actually in one issue i got my first linux cd... Debian 1.something running 2.0.12 i think... so mame (b. Feb 97) might be younger... heh

Hey Rage, do you have Shinobi on MAME? Double Dragon? What about Street Fighter 1? Those games were the best growing up....
