Default Moving to calg from NYC

So my sister is looking at moving out here from Manhattan, with the US economy the way it is, she just wants out of the US. She's never been to AB before, but is interested in calgary/toronto/ or montreal. And shes a 31yr old corp accountant.

But looking at quebec taxes, shes not too interested in moving there.

So if you were to move into calgary from Manhattan, where should she be looking? I would assume either right downtown in some condo/around 17th/ possibly even marda loop right?

I myself am totally different then her, so I don't have answers for her. I don't go downtown often, I would never live in a condo, and arts/entertainment/city life isn't what I know. So help me out here.

Coming from NYC I assume she already lives in a fairly modest apartment? She could probably find a similar / better condo downtown for less since the cost of living in NYC is ridiculious unless you leave far away.

I think the best thing is: What does she have at the moment? Condo / House? 1br / 2br / etc?

Have you looked at Jordan's thread?
    http://forums.beyond.ca/st/344005/urban-condo-update/

I live in a downtown condo and my biggest complaint is downtown is pretty much a fucking ghost town after 6pm (at least for me it is). If she's looking for something more lively, maybe 17th ave is for her.

Nah she goes to bed by 10/11, not interested in bar hopping/clubs.. She just needs to be around restaurants and general goings on..

And yeah I dunno what her rent was there.. 2400/mo maybe? So it will be cheaper/nicer living for sure.

Tell her to come to Winnipeg!

But really, what's going to compare to Manhattan? I'd say with her line of work and coming from NYC, Toronto would be a easy transition.

17th ave would be her best option, but I would highly discourage her from moving here from NYC. It would be like moving from Calgary to Esteven, Saskatchewan.

If she likes the arts+cultural scene than Montreal is the place to be. But she'll have to put some effort into learning French and she'll be taxed more. But given her age and lifestyle it seems like the best fit vs Calgary or boring Toronto.

This is what I was thinking, actually. No matter where she gets a place, it will be virtually impossible to put her in a location which offers the kind of activity she is used to having access to.

I think T.O. might be better than Calgary for what she's after.

Tell her to rent/buy in Mission. Lots of restaurants but far away from the bigger bars and clubs. Nice area.

If she likes evening/nightlife T.O., Montreal, OR Vancouver. Downtown Calgary just dies at 6pm. Nothing is 24/7 (except fast food and Denny's).

Whenever I walk around at 7 or 8pm here it feels so fucking creepy and empty.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

I'm surprised no one has asked for pictures of said sister yet.

Anyways, the Beltline or Mission near 4th Street and 17th Avenue would be nice. Close to downtown, lots of restaurants etc. Main reason I differentiate Beltline from Mission is that there seems to be a bit more condo development in the Beltline right now so there is more choice if she wants something a little newer and modern.

Calgary is so much like an iphone: iCalgary - There's a bylaw for that.

I think it'd be a huge adjustment for your sister to make if she moved here. NYC is always hustling and bustling the majority of the day with lots of things to do while Calgary is one of those quiet cities with not too many activities to do in comparison to NYC.

she's going to be in extreme culture shock if she moves from NYC to Calgary.

Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver if she wants anything close to NYC.

Yaletown in Vancouver would suit her best. You can walk everywhere.

I'd vote for Toronto. Its similar to NYC. The only reason to move here is if she actually wants to "own" a place in downtown.

Bridgeland is a good place to be near downtown and have lots of Restaurant options.
