Curious how old her husband was, his picture looked a little dated.

Sad we aren't allowed to protect our homes in the same manner here... good for her for knowing how to use a shotgun correctly!

@AK47, you obviously have not shot a 12ga shotgun.

What a horrible story, two major events in her life that no one should have to experience.
Lucky for her, state laws allow her to use a gun in self defense, which is not a freedom we have here in Canada.

    You can, but you better;

    a) make sure you kill the guy good and dead,
    b) pop a round into the roof afterwards and tell the cops it was a warning shot.

Otherwise you are likely looking at getting convicted of using excessive force.
I was almost charged with using excessive force once...

And make sure you don't shoot him in the back, otherwise it will look like he was trying to leave, and then you get nailed with the excessive force charge.

I wonder if the law would have protected her if the guy did *not* have the knife. Seems like she was going to shoot regardless of whether he was armed or not.

If you do that here, then you have to prove you felt your life was in danger. (Which probably would not have been *that* difficult given she's a woman and at least one of the guys looked pretty big)

That picture of the husband did look dated. Maybe he was a lot older. Like... a LOT older.

She seems exceptionally composed for someone who just killed someone else. Probably still in emotional shock from her husband's passing as well....

What people would do in a home invasion has been covered extensively on Beyond. But for me too - if I hear a noise, walk downstairs and someone is down there who shouldn't be, they certainly risk getting shot. If I can't see their hands and that they aren't a risk, I'm going to assume they are a threat and do what I need to do.

If I *can* see properly, then they will probably remain alive as long as they don't make any threatening moves. I really would never want to know I took someone's life... but I'll fiercely protect myself and my family.

She did what she had to do and I totally respect her for taking the situation into her own hands. Dipshits clearly picked the wrong place to break into. I'm going to guess the guy who lived through it isn't going to try that shit anymore.

I'm pretty sure she wouldn't be charged here either. The one guy had a 12" hunting knife and she thought one of them was someone who had been stalking her. I don't think any court would find that she didn't have a reasonable fear for her and her baby's safety.

ETA: should refresh the thread prior to replying.

As for whether the one guy didn't have a knife, I think that would depend on whether or not there were signs that someone was at home (lights on, etc.) If so, that takes it out of the realm of people just breaking in to steal things, they must have contemplated some violence (either to further a theft or sexual assault).
