Default Corix Utilities / Atco changing over gas meters?

Keep getting calls from Corix Utilites and they want to come out and change out my gas meter on behalf of Atco... which is odd since my house is less than 3 years old. WTF

    Legit?

ATCO was at my place this morning, they knocked on the door and asked if they could change the meter over. Took them 20 minutes outside and they came inside to check the furnace (dirty filter, replaced with my extra one), fireplace and water heater (had few papers stacked on top...fire hazard) as well. Left a service sheet indicating what they had done.

Both guys had ATCO ID and ATCO uniforms.

Why are they doing this? What is the benefit to them? Are these the new gas meters which are able to send usage data remotely perhaps?

I got a flyer from Atco a few months ago that they would be installing the remote readers in my area and a contractor would be doing the work... haven't seem anything yet.

Probably same program in Calgary I would guess.

Quick Google led me to the ATCO GAS website...

I searched the 2011 news and found this:

    http://www.atcogas.com/News/2011-New...echnology.aspx

    and then this:

    http://www.atcogas.com/News/2011-New...echnology.aspx

    Corix is mentioned in there.

House less than 3 yrs old.
Isn't the gas meter on the outside of your house then?

I can see 1940-50s houses, some meters are inside the house. But most I thought were outside. They don't need access, just to turn on appliances again but they should have credentials/ID available and visible.

This isn't about moving the meter to the outside, it's about automatting the meter reading process... It's in the link.

Pretty sure they need to get inside to make 100% sure your furnace/hot water heater is working properly after the switchover.
