Default Not sure if my car is OBD-I or OBD-II?

I have a 96 civic cx-g but a jdm b16a (which is an obd1 engine) and I want to buy a scangauge II or similar.
Under my dash there is an OBD-II 16-pin trapezoidal port, but I'm not 100% sure if my car is actually OBD-II compatible and not just OBD-I with an OBD-II style port.
Should I go ahead and buy the Scangauge? or will it not work?
    Any input is appreciated.

Its more or less obd1 but its obd2 compliant. 95 to 97 were messed up years for that. The code reader will convert the two digit manufacturer code to the sae P0xxx style of code. And you will got a obd1 data stream.

    Edit:
I read what you were saying wrong. If its a obd1 ecu, your code reader will not work. A good quick test is to see if you have 12v at pin 16 and grounds on pins 4 and 5. or you can just go to auto value or a place that pulls codes for free and see if you have communication befor you buy one.

Your ECU is probably OBD1 with a jumper harness. Take a picture of your ecu, its behind the passenger kick panel. I dont think the scan gauge will work with an OBD1 ecu.

Whats the ECU code itself? But it does look like you have the OBDI ECU

ok, his car is an OBD-I, but has an adapter to OBD-II interface. HO2S and 78si nailed it.
