Is the USB stick required to make it work? I see it's 50 dollars to buy one new.

No, not at all. It's the bluetooth data thing. So if you have it plugged in to your comp, and then you arrive from your run and throw your watch on the desk, it'll automatically transfer the log over to your computer. That won't be possible without it, but as far as functions go it's the same. The USB charger is still included.
