Driving lesson? I thought you said diving lessons.
Police say it was a driving lesson gone wrong that ended with a new driver and his private instructor executing a perfect reverse belly flop into a Reedmere Avenue backyard swimming pool Thursday afternoon.
"It was a newly licensed driver with a G-1 doing his first driving lesson," said Staff Sgt. Brett Corey, community relations officer with the Windsor Police Service.
"He put it in reverse and instead of the brake he hit the accelerator by mistake.
He panicked and the car reversed through a fence and ended up in the pool."
The car, a copper-coloured late model Dodge Calibre, was parked in the lot behind the TD Trust at the corner of Wyandotte and Reedmere.
The car's owner, a woman, traded places with the student driver and the lesson began.
The car rocketed backwards, hopped a curb, zipped across a narrow strip of lawn, crashed through a wooden fence and plunged into the deep end of the pool at 281 Reedmere.
The two occupants managed to escape unharmed as the vehicle made a slow half turn and settled in the pool, completely submerged.
"I saw them literally reverse," said eyewitness Nick Ryan, who lives in the neighbourhood and was going to the bank at the time. "It (the foot on the peddle) got heavier and heavier. It crashed through the fence and into the pool.
They both managed to get out. She was screaming. It didn't seem like it was a big struggle for them to get out."
