Looking at replacing my K&N air filters. Couple questions for all of you about the AFE dry air filters:
1. Any good compared to OEM, TRD and K&N?
2. Where to buy?
Thanks.

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.
Look into S&B. Far superior product than AFE.
Thanks for the tips, I will look into that.
Any thoughts on K&N vs. OEM?
Been told K&N filters don't really filter as well when it comes to the ultra small particles as compared to dry and oem filters. Really a lot of opinions online, so I'm curious if I should sway away from the K&N filters. I want to enable the vehicles to breath well, don't really care about the extra 1 or 2 hp I get, more concerned with increasing fuel economy. I've noticed the K&N's seem to give me better mileage
OEM is pretty much the best you can get as far as filtration goes. Nothing wrong with K&N unless you're putting it on a diesel engine. You might see short term mileage gains with higher flowing filters but the long term consequences won't be worth it. Air filtration tends to be overlooked but that's where the majority of the crap that ends up in your engine comes from. I'm not too gung-ho about AFE because I blew up a (diesel) engine with one of those. It was a combination of things though and not one issue or mod directly to blame. Do your research and I think you will find that S&B strikes the right balance between airflow and filtration. It's also a good idea IMHO to use a pre-filter sock on any aftermarket setup.
+1 for this, I saw online that all these people in Japan and california, etc, all running open ITBs. Tried it last summer and my compression test went down like 50 psi in 20k km's, it was an eye opener. Pulled hard though....Originally posted by heavyfuel

What would be a good pre-filter sock? Where to get one?

I checked out the site...nothing for my IS and RX though
But they do have one for my truck
Yeah I wasn't sure about what they carry for cars and like I said K & N is fine on gas engines. Maybe measure up the inlet on your CAI and see if if there's a filter that'll match up? I've seen big rig air filters made to fit nicely under the hood of older Dodges... anything's possible!Originally posted by BokCh0y

Not sure what you drive but apparently the pre-oiled k&n (or other branded?) filters can cause your maf to read funny after a while. Not sure if it's an old wive's tale but apparently the hotwire gets covered in oil from the filter and reads funny.
If you take anything I have to say seriously, you're gunna have a bad time.

Yes it's true, because most people over-oil the filters as well.

Have seen this on a couple trucks that have come in with K and N filters that are soaked with oil.Originally posted by DeleriousZ
