Looks like immobilizer is bypassed in VWs by researchers.

VW is fighting to keep it not published.

Hondas and Fiats are also implicated as they also use the same system.

Maybe instead of fighting to keep it under wraps, they should talk to these researchers and solve it with a software patch or something.

Also, FUCK ALL Y'ALL. DON'T TOUCH MUH CAR.

I don't think there is a patch for this. Switching out fobs will cost VW tons of money.

And looks like thieves need 2 days for the software process. So this most likely will happen at Airport parking lots.

This is why credit card company stopped Mythbuster to attempt all the CC myths.

You mean, physically switching out the chips in key fobs? Considering how each car gets 2-3...

Definately no software patch for this one. The bug is in the code on a chip in whichever ECU handles lock/unlock/immobilization tasks. I doubt the chip is field servicable/replacible, meaning ECU recalls to fix the problem. The key has nothing to do with this.

As for 2 days, assuming it's just reverse engineering the encryption, you can easily cluster a farm of servers to reduce that to minutes. Make it accessable over the internet, and a smartphone front end to handle the initial and final comms. Voila, a smartphone that unlocks and starts a shit ton of cars. The risk is there to keep it out of public hands. But hey, if these few guys can find it and hack it, there will be someone else that can figure it out.

Wonder if this comes out if VAG will get sued. I mean, its common knowledge that with old Hondas, the keys can unlock 50% of the Hondas out there and start 10% of them, and they never recalled anything.

Do car manufacturers recall anything that isn't a purely safety issue? I'm not sure how that judge is claiming "public safety", when it's about car theft, not physically harming anyone.

You want a good theft deterrent? Just leave a VW service manual on the front seat with the transmission chapter open, and lots of greasy fingerprints all over the pages

I can imagine that APR or some other VAG software mod house is probably looking at an aftermarket angle to secure the Megamos Crypto system. Like Norton after a Trojan outbreak.

oh man, those guys who found this out are going to be so laoded. VAG is going to pay a fortune to keep it under wraps. But I gues since we know it can be done now someone else will just come along and do it.
