What car do you have?
I would highly suggest ordering a cable, getting the software, doing a bit of reading, and DIY. You can find all the info you need over at bimmerfest.com

I've done my F25 and a couple others including an F10... But I haven't kept up to date with new software packages because I've already configured all the options I needed.

Aside from that, I've heard good things about ECU Program...
