    Default UofC Jiu Jitsu

UofC Jiu Jitsu is firing up again for the Winter session.

You can try out the first week before having to register.

Classes start on the 17th, info is here

It's wicked exercise and loads of fun. A decent video of what you'd learn is on Youtube. If you watch the orange and yellow belts, these are moves you learn right away.

The class is great, the people are awesome. There is no feeling of competition in the class at all, we're all just there to learn. Within the first year you'll grade for a yellow belt, gain endurance and confidence, and get in pretty awesome shape.

If you're looking for something to help you get in shape (or stay in shape) I'd encourage you to come for the first week and check it out.

Typically we end the class with one or more of the following:
Circle - stand in the middle - class attacks
Gauntlet - Walk down the middle of two lines of students - get randomly attacked most often with weapons
V - Stand in front of Sensei - He releases people to attack, sometimes in multiples

Any of the three would include defense against weapons.

It's intimidating at first, but then you realize that there is no judgment at all and you get over it pretty quickly.

There is a lot of tradition in this style of jitsu and overall sensei expects students to take it seriously so people don't get injured.

The style includes throws, locks, and grappling. Some classes are taught by BJJ instructors, mostly Sundays. You would learn to defend against knives, chains, kosh (padded pipe), sword, baseball bat, punches, kicks, grabs from in front and behind.

You should try out the first week and see what it's like. Expect a bootcamp type warmup and a bit of time learning how to breakfall but you'll learn probably two throws, a wristlock, armlock and possibly some groundwork in week 1.

Wear shorts or jogging pants and a shirt you're not worried about. You'd have to purchase a gi before you an grade, but it's not expected in the first few weeks.

Too bad I am not in Calgary at the moment, otherwise this sounds like something I could use. A regimented workout program that would help tone up.

It's unofficial, I probably shouldn't promote it that way since UofC wants a waiver to be signed, but the first week is filled with "Better register and sign waiver to continue" warnings.

Just graded for my purple belt over the weekend. This means I should get to do some instruction in the upcoming session so I need some novices to come out!

Spring session is open - May 13 to June 26, 2014
Tues/Thurs classes only. Apparently it works out to $4.75 per hour - Pretty kick-ass price for a kick-ass class.

have you trained anywhere else or is this your primary instruction?

*edit* upon watching the video, that seems more like a weapons self defence course mixed with Judo than Jiu jitsu

    JJJ not BJJ.

Japanese Jiu Jitsu gave birth to Judo which gave birth to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. So yea, similarities but not the same.

I haven't done anything else to speak of. If I was to assist the instructor it would be pretty basic stuff.

lol, that post reminded me of this

Jitsu is firing up next Tuesday. If you're curious at all just come out for the Tues/Thurs classes next week and decide if you want to stay afterward. Unofficially you can show up to a class or two before registering.

It is a shorter session with no Sunday classes, but normal classes will resume in Sept.

No need to be in shape and it's not a competitive atmosphere. We're all there to learn, to help each other learn, and to get in shape. I did basically nothing for 10 years of marriage and kids and walked my lazy ass into class three years ago...if I can do it, anyone can.

Let me know if you're going and I'll make sure to introduce myself.

Jitsu is firing up again. If you need exercise or want to learn something new they come and try it out for a week. I've spent the summer doing nothing but getting fatter, so I'll be there Tuesday sweating my fat arse off. Hope to see some of you there!

$320 for 7 months of Martial Arts, 6 hours a week! Can't beat that.

    $175 from Sept to Dec.
