I'd just call the rental place and ask, Uhaul you would probably be find considering half the uhaul vehicles have US plates anyways. Most of the time crossing the border by car at Sweet grass they're pretty chill anyways. They're well aware lots of people just cross to buy things and come back right after.

Anyone know if it is possible to rent a homedepot van for a day and cross the border with it to do a pickup? Or is anyone thinking of going down soon who would have room for 3 long boxes (approx 240 lbs total)?

I drove a rental RV from Canadream over the Border a few years back. Border agenst going into States did not GAF.

Always have a physical copy of the rental agreement incase the border agent asks for it, that's the advice National have given me on numerous occasions. CBP or CBSA have never asked for it though.
