I use QNAP NAS at home and at work for non critical data. It's cheap and it works well.

Well I don't know if it's just way over my head, but I can't even figure out how to get a backup started onto it. I thought it was going to be seen as an additional drive on my network that I could choose as a destination with my windows backup utility. It doesn't show up as a destination.
Do I just drag and drop? I can't seem to figure out how to make my own folders on it. It has a bunch of default folders, but not really one's I need.
How do I setup an auto-backup schedule on it?
You installed all the QNAP software that came with the unit as well?
I personally stopped using Windows backup utils when an "update" from MS came out essentially removing W7 file recovery method.
Normally the NAS itself has a hostname that you gave it during setup, you can use that or the IP address to browse to it.
Start -> Run (Windows +R , or type this in the search box)
\\nameofnas\
or
\\192.168.1.50\ (using the correct IP address of the NAS).
Then you should see whatever file shares you have setup on the NAS itself through its interface. (It may be under a Samba, or file shares setting)
See if that helps.
Once that part is done, you can setup your backups to use the \\NASNAME\ShareName path.

edit - looks like that article (and the last time I tried imaging with W8) is old, W8 does offer imaging again.

That's what I thought, thanks.
Would a nas even be worth it for smaller configurations if I have my server running 24/7 anyways? Currently I have two 4tb drives in my plex server and was considering moving the drives to a nas and adding a third drive to go to a raid setup but since my server has to run 24/7 I'm not sure if there's an advantage.
Yes....first it opens this - "QNAP Finder":Originally posted by revelations

which then gets me into it's IP with the browser, and opens this screen:
When I go into the "backup station" I get this, and have NO idea where to go from there:

That's a little out of my pay grade I'm afraid...I can see it in my windows explorer. But I can't add or change names of the default directories.

I've never used a QNAP but here's my wild guess...
I would assume that under "File Station" you should be able to create new folders and select which folder would be shared as well.
If you can't I would (from File Explorer/ you first pic) open the Home shared folder and make a new folder called Backups. Make sure it's shared then point your backups to that as a start.
In windows backup select that folder (just copy & paste the path).
\\NASD952E5\home\backups

Okay...that worked for creating new folders where I want and what name....but when I try to set up a Windows backup, I'm not able to point to a network drive. Only my DVD drive and my 2nd local Hard drive.
So I'm thinking I have to set up the automatic back up from the QNAP side of things....
Also....the "LAN" light continuously blinks a rapid orange...24/7. Hasn't stopped. HDD's blink the odd time when they're working...but that LAN just never stops.
Dumb question, it is wired to your router right?
It is. And as I said, I can drag n drop files from the desktop onto the NAS, as well as play them. I just can't figure out how to set up an auto backup.Originally posted by schocker

I probably want it to do two different things;
1. Put all my media on it and use it as a media server to my big tv.
2. As an auto backup location for all my data on the desktop.
I use C: (a 120GB SSD drive) for the OS and all my programs.
All my data goes onto the secondary HD, a 1 terabyte WD SATA drive. Even my library (my documents, my pictures, etc) I've changed the target so they automatically go to D: drive.
Sorry, I thought you were using a Pro version... I mostly use Pro... I would have suggested buying Pro as you're using this for a business (you can upgrade in place).Originally posted by C_Dave45

Your LAN light will be blinking all the time that's normal... basically the network cards are constantly talking to each other to see who is there.Originally posted by C_Dave45

You could sent the backup image to your WD drive then run a scheduled copy job to transfer it over to your NAS everyday.Originally posted by C_Dave45

Sorry can't help with any of the QNAP software... hopefully someone else can help you with that!

QNAP has a backup client that you can install do to you backups to the NAS.
NetBak Replicator is what its called
http://www.qnap.com/useng/index.php?...Bak_Replicator
Should do exactly what you want.
Dave, FYI most of these devices are set up people who work in IT. You can see why now.
Most people go with something simpler, like a DLINK local "cloud" system thats more or less plug and play after you jump through their software hoops.
i have a qnap system but it has 6 ports and raid backup at work... is that any good? its working well so far, runs quick!
I don't think that's fair to Dave...Originally posted by revelations

...
The QNAP is a Home & SOHO product, it should have least simple instructions on how to setup the backup and shouldn't need to hire someone in "IT"... Poor documentation that their part.
