Default Westjet just lost its flair, have no reason to fly them anymore

The only thing that Westjet had going for themselves as an attractive airline was the free checked luggage. This airline has gone from the low cost model that it initially set out with to being a regular airline that emulates everything that the dinosaurs had going for themselves.

With this latest move, Westjet has fallen well below Air Canada - the latter will also likely match this move but has better products and services overall.

I think this is also encouragement to push their west jet credit cards as you get your free checked bags still with the world elite card or whatever it is

Pretty demented business model if thats the case.

    Exclude 99% to appease 1%

Maybe they think 5000 customers can keep them afloat

Westjet lost it years ago. Their pricing for years have not been far off from the other major carriers who have better service.

I never understood why people loved Westjet...

I never really noticed any price difference or service difference?

Snazzy commercials poking fun at the big guys.

I try to fly AC whenever I can too, way better experience for the same money.

This. Discussions on who is less-evil between AC/WJ is different from discussions about Rogers/Telus/Bell how?

They both suck but AC seems to have been better lately. I'm an economy chump, so anything worth noting is easy. I find WJ has less leg room than AC, and I'm not even a tall guy. Only time I fly with WJ is when my friend has a 40% off code

Icelandic Air is pretty bad. On a 6 hour flight they don't even give you a meal unless you pay for it. At least they don't make you pay for movies like Thomas Cook or Condor.

I had a flight from Prague to Helsinki on FinnAir, now THAT is a sweet airline. Everything was awesome. I even got the choice of tuna or salmon sandwich on such a short flight, and it was probably the best salmon salad sandwich I've ever eaten. FinnAir really impressed me.

I used to prefer Air Canada, then Amex setup an agreement for flights with WestJet booked through Centurion Travel. Now I fly WestJet... Saved 200 bucks on my last flight to Vancouver!

Would be nice if they had a better rewards program, I do find it weird them to start charging for baggage.

WJ is following by example - others have already done so in the domestic market. AC will follow suit shortly as well -which, had they NOT, would have meant increased revenue as WJ pax will switch to AC over this.

They are charging for baggage on Econo only, which sells out stupid quick and don't make up a large portion of seats. So if you book Flex or Plus, you either get one free bag or two free bags. They are also changing their reward structure, so people who actually travel a decent amount are going to get 5% back on airfare now after they hit $3000/yr spending.

The people who are blowing up Twitter are the ones who travel maybe once a year, don't use the reward programs and don't know how to maximize value. They are also probably taking 2 suitcases each for a family of 5 for a week long trip.

Yup, with all their bitching and complaining about how much overweight luggage costs them they really cant justify charging a 110 lb girl the same as a 350lb jello monster...

They really need to make it so the people who can't fit in the confines of the armrest, pay extra or are forced to buy 2 seats. I'm 6'1" and 230lbs and I can fit in an airplane seat. I usually pay extra for the window or aisle in the emergency row just so I'm comfortable. But when I sit down and the guy in the middle is oozing over each side and I have his elbow jammed into me, I'm not happy.

I like the argument that people want to be credited if they don't check baggage, which I find funny because it's not like they were getting credited before when it was free.
