    Default Impersonating douchebag gets rolled

This is the second time something has come up about a regular civilian impersonating a military official.

Pretty sad that people have enough disrespect to pretend they fought a war or served for a country they never did.

At least he was called out and got rolled with charges.

Yeah, so I wonder if the wife was tricked this entire time. That'd be pretty shocking and divorce worthy IMO.

Yeah, and everywhere he worked/socialized he was always talking about his (fictional) military service. Pretty strange stuff.

People who do this kind of thing have serious mental problems.

I actually met, and hung around with a dude who did something similar. He had an etire life built around the myth that he was one of the rap-attack wildland firefighters, and a certified Search-and-rescue trainer. He even ran a business training people to become certified in Search-and-rescue. Charged a pretty penny as well.
It all came unraveled when one of his former students tried to use the fake certificate he gave to get a job with a legitimate SAR organization. Apparently someone checks these things!

Anyway, last I heard, the guy skipped town under threat of lawsuits and physical harm from several of his former "students."

    What's the big deal??

Obviously the dude has issues, what's the harm?

Did he do it with malice? Did he hurt anyone?

He's a weird guy, but I don't understand the need for charges

^ because he's a disgrace to others that actually have served time in the military. Without charges, what's to stop him from keep doing it? Sure nothing bad happened yet, but that can quickly change.

I actually agree with Toma. The only reason this is getting any coverage is because the CBC was dumb enough to put him on air and are now flooding news networks with his case to try and cover their asses.

I'm not a military aficionado or anything but even I know, fake medals aside, that beards are a no-no. I saw him on TV live and my first thought was "something is off here..."

It's certainly insulting and sad but, well, who gives a shit? If he broke the law then charge him but this isn't worthy of the coverage its getting.

I suppose there's a certain irony in you defending him because he only pretended to be something that you would otherwise hate: a NATO soldier serving in Kosovo.

Anyway he's charged with impersonating a public officer (can't impersonate a cop, soldier, ranger etc.) which seems a pretty reasonable rule.

The charges of military wear are to essentially prevent people from receiving benefit (be it tangible or intangible) for something they did not earn. In the case of presenting medals it is an emotional problem people have but the same group of laws also refers to people trying to receive military benefits despite not serving, or not serving for an eligible unit.

    I'm a little bit dontcare.

If a guy wants to say that he is the King of Siam, then let him. If he wants to run around in a bunnysuit or a batman costume saying - "I'm batman" then I say whoop go for it. GI joe? Well, why not - people in the US do it all the time, dress up every day in the camo gear with french beret, saying "RAMBO!" even though they may only have served two weeks as a cooks assistant in the US military.

As long as hes not feigning a position of enforcable authority (like police)

BTW: He can't be the king, because I'm the king "Hail to the king, baby!"

If he actually tried to be a position of authority, then I could see reason to crack down, but pressing charges because it offends people? Don't tell me the military personnel are that soft.

Didn't you hear? Being offended is a life crippling insult. Like how a rocket scientist wearing a bowling shirt with cartoon pinup girls is preventing women from entering careers in the sciences.

"Imitation is the sincerest [form] of flattery"

He didn't hurt anyone, he didn't claim any health benefits, he didn't cheat or swindle anyone out of their money. Leave him alone.
I've had people actually defraud me and I would never in a million years assume the police would press charges, but if someone puts on the wrong costume and doesn't steal anyone's money it's the most important story in Canada.

Someone should have set this guy straight long, long ago. His immediate family (maybe not the wife, but parents/siblings and so on) you'd think would know he never served in the military.

The guy obviously has some mental shit going on and, while he should have been corrected long before something like this happened, I really don't think he and his family deserve what they are/will continue to be getting. It's sad.
