Default Employment insurance net income? (Maternity leave)

Mrs.Tok is beginning mat leave next week, she's entitled to the full amount, but I'm just wondering what her net income will be? I'm sure there must be a Beyond or two that has a spouse currently on leave.

Do they take CPP and EI off of your EI cheques?

Ends up being like 1800 a month. They don't take enough taxes off
.. So be warned. It'll bite you on next year's taxes.

My wife is getting $454 twice a month plus $100 child benefit once a month. I make too much for any other benefits.

    From the gov't webpage:

"For most people, the basic rate for calculating EI benefits is 55% of your average insurable weekly earnings, up to a maximum amount. As of January 1, 2014, the maximum yearly insurable earnings amount is $48,600. This means that you can receive a maximum amount of $514 per week."

    Minus income tax, of course.

    They don't take much.
My wife is getting $1,008 EI bi-weekly + $200.00 UCCB monthly for 2 kids.

I usually get extra taken off my cheque every year just to make sure I don't owe, so I'm sure I'll be fine there.

I also think you don't get a cheque for the first two weeks? Or is that for standard lay-off and not maternity leave?

The first cheque takes ages to come but I think they backdate it - atleast thats what i remember with my wifes first check in 2013. You also can't apply until the baby is born.

Service Canada website says you can start collecting up to 8 weeks before the expected due date.

Don't expect the first cheque in 4 weeks. As stated it can take much much longer than that. But just ensure you keep filling out your EI forms and they will backdate you.

I applied the next day or so once the baby came out. Yes 4 weeks before the 1st payment but it is backdated.

Even if you get the money taken off your pay cheque, it won't get applied against her income as we are taxed on our individual income, and not on combined family income.

I know, but my refund should cover her deficit.

$890 every two weeks if she's got the max. Source, my bank account statement.

Other things to remember. It's effectively 50 weeks. You lose 2 weeks of it. Payments will be erratic at first. Statements don't always match up. Once it stabilizes, then you can schedule it like clockwork.

Make a note when it's going to end for you, and plan accordingly.

Also.. we're just starting the cycle of getting rid of baby stuff as Miranda is now a year old... so if you're looking for stuff like jolly jumpers and etc.. we're going to be advertising it all soon.
