Default Does Telus Optik TV Take away speed from internet?

    Hey everyone,

I just signed up for Telus internet 100, and I'm contemplating signing up for their optik TV service.

What i've heard is that if you use optik tv, it uses the internet connection and can slow down your speeds.

So I have signed up for 100 mbps, but if someone is using it to watch HD channel then only 95 mbps is available to me while the tv uses 5.

Is this correct? or was this in the past?

I don't want any interference with my internet speed for tv so if its the case then i'll keep with shaw for tv...

My concern is that if I have 100, and thats the max they can do...then I will lose from my full potential speed.

Also, when using newsgroups, i'm worried that the bandwidth will only goto internet and tv will stop working. I don't know if that's correct...

If you're on fiber, no. If you're on DSL, maybe. See codetrap's post. There are limitations on DSL too so different physical locations will have different "max" bandwidth available. Too many factors to judge if it will happen to you or not.

Telus uses VDSL2 (if you don't have fiber) when they offer 100 mbps and they bond two lines together. With this they can usually overprovision enough that it won't effect you unless your very far from the CO.

You can check fibre.telus.com/ but its not always correct.

Your TV will never stop working even if your Internet is 100% pinned and you are using all your HD feeds. Telus has QOS on their gear for this exact reason, TV gets the highest priority on their gear by default, so regardless on how much you saturate, you will never make TV stutter or anything like that.

Been with telus for 5 years now, 3 on vdsl at 15 and then 25mbps, and now on 50 fiber, haven't had any issues with both situations, though fiber gives you much faster upload from what I gather.

I always max out usenet at 6.2MB/s on my 50mbps line and watch tv all night long at the same time. As others have mentioned, it is over provisioned. I recall that even 25mbps lines used to pair at 32mbps on the modem, so you got a few tv streams before it even remotely starts to impact your speed, and at 100 mbps you will never notice it at all.

If you are on fiber you will have another white box connected to your Telus optik modem and that white box will also have a small ups attached to it as well. I can send a photo of my fiber optik boxes.

I'm on fibre 100 and it does not impact my speeds.
I can watch up to 3 hd boxes concurrently without speed loss.

I'm not sure what would happen if I had them all record at the same time that might eat the bandwidth then.

I've seen quite a few people switch from Optik back to Bell as a result of slow internet speeds.
