Default Asked by a family member to sell their car in Alberta. Best process, least hassle?

I've been asked by an immediate family member to sell their SMART car in Alberta. The car is originally from Alberta, currently registered out of province. The steps as I see it:

    1. Have the car gifted to me, removes sales tax issues.

    2. Pass the out of province inspection.

    3. License and register the vehicle under my name.

    4. Sell the car as anyone normally would.

    Have I overlooked something?

Aside from having two Step 3's and thinking we have sales tax on used cars in Alberta, no I don't see any issues.

Why do they need to sell it in Alberta?

I agree Rage. Just putting together a plan so I can talk her out of the idea. Really, she'd be better off taking a hit on the sale compared to all that's involved in the Alberta plan. Not to mention the eight hour drive I'd have to make, an engine can blow and it would be a write-off in my experience with the Mercede$ (cough) Benz dealership.

    Why alberta?

Nobody is going to buy a smart car in 'Berta.

Rethink!!! I'm not doing it! I was never in love with the plan to begin with. I did the minimum effort.

    Thanks all.

I did it with my parents fit . Told them i generally don't even bother selling my own cars private sale as i find its not worth the hassle of dealing with kijiji people for weeks on end so i refuse to be involved in her selling the car.

She wants me to come to the dealer with her to look at things and help with negotiations, that's fine. I don't abhor that process nearly as much.

I said if you cant do it yourself just trade it in t the dealer.

I put an post on beyond for her linking to her kijiji ad. That was it.

Took her 3 months to unload the car. Worth the 500 bucks she got over what the dealer offered her? you tell me

And for other posters cars generally tend to sell for a bit more money in Alberta, Calgary in particular.

Not in my experiernce. Every car Ive ever tried to sell was almost always the lowest kms, best condition, and priced in the lower range of average, and I still couldnt get anyone to even come look in person.

A smart car isn't worth much (kijiji showing 3k to 9k for used ones depending on year/shape)

By the time you bring it back to Alberta (time and fuel), do an out of province inspection on it, fix anything that needs to be fixed, pay registration for alberta, pay for temporary insurance for test drives, and then get lowballed on kijiji anyways, you'd be better off selling it wherever the car is currently registered.

The car is worth around $6,500 at market prices, better off taking $5,000 in her province.

I'm thinking of talking her into trading two for one at a car dealer, get a used car made by a company ending in a vowel for the least trouble going forward. Kijiji, I hated the world of pain when just selling a Shaw box, a car would be gun to head.

Total hassle. Detail it and sell it. Either be patient (if you have time) or price it to go.

I'd happily take the loss rather than deal with beyond/kijji/autotrader lowballers.

When i sold my mustang i probably took 1k less than I could have got privately and was done with it in a matter of minutes without any thought. When I sold my g35 i wasted countless hours meeting up with people so they could examine the car, ho and hum about it, offer me $5k cash for it, etc.. etc.., and at the end of the day I think I ended up selling it for about the same a dealer would have given me just to end the frustration.

Have her "sell" the car to you, you get the OPI done and then sell it here. You don't have to pay sales tax on it either.
