It sounds like the operation is the same either way.
The transmission physically is the same as the 45RFE used in the Cherokee 15 years ago. The Engineers simply modified the software to use more of the available planetary gear combinations for marketing reasons. This only affects the mid range gears and has little to no effect on performance, other than the 6-speed utilizing the weak 2c clutch for up-shifts instead of just down-shifts like the 5-speed. I was involved in building and testing race parts for these transmissions for 10 years but I wouldn't touch a truck that has one now. The 8-speed is light years ahead in efficiency and durability.
