One of the jobs I'm working soon require me to supply my own cowboy boots and wear them as uniform.
I don't believe it is appropriate to expect people to own these already so I'm polling to see whether I'm out of whack.
Yes
No
I used to.

I don't think the company has to expect people to already own them, however I don't see what's wrong with them requiring you to purchase your own. There are lots of jobs where you have to buy your own uniform or tools. How is this any different?Originally posted by jwslam

Yes, and I wear them damn near everyday.
Most comfortable and diverse footwear out there.
As mentioned above, if the job requires you to wear them then I don't see an issue. No different than being required to wear steel toes.
I don't own Cowboy boots but I do buy my own work boots for when I do site visits, dress shoes for when I'm in the office, biking shoes to commute to work, cold weather shoes for biking to work in cold weather... if it's a long term deal then I'd spend the money on something comfortable otherwise Value Village might be a good option.
Holy shit, poll has four cowboy boot owners right now. That's already exceeded my expectations hahaha
I am Asian and do own cowboy boots, but mainly for Stampede purposes. I did wear them once while mowing the lawn to get some mud/dirt on them. Pretty comfortable and sounds cool walking around in them.
Someday we may need to activate the halo structure off Deerfoot and destroy the North East.

Extra info: This is a temp job where I'm only working 2 days, which is probably barely enough to buy a pair of boots. So I'm working 2 days at this job to buy boots I never wanted / felt I needed...

Re: Dress shoes - I have the option of getting cheapo shoes from Payless, or anything between to AE's. Where does one get cheap cowboy boots? If you know of a place please let me know.

i had some, but it was just because my dad had a few pair and i grabbed them one time for a work stampede function way back when and never gave them back, lol... i hate wearing them, especially if i am driving or something, i hate wearing hard soles driving, i need the feedback from the pedal, i dont know why... but i am not sure i could wear those every day, maybe if i kept them at work and changed in to them when i got there.

Lamleys is not too bad for prices. Around 100 - 150 for boots. But at least you can get a set that will be comfortable. I do not wear mine often but I did buy a semi decent pair so that I would be comfortable wearing them when I do.Originally posted by jwslam

Other option is buying a used set. Kijiji? Goodwill? Value Village?
I've got two pair, a basic black that I've had almost 20 years (re-soled once) and a new pair of genuine Mississippi alligator, courtesy of the best damn boot shop in town, Alberta Boot, custom made just for little old me.
I'm by no means a "cowboy" but all four people in our house have their own pair.

The X5 i bought earlier this year really is FULLY LOADED though not a single option missing including infrared night driving
He (his family) is or was Alberta Boot. Fantastic shopping experience but I don't think they do much in the field of discount (cheap) boots. I could be wrong though. Alberta Boot is where you go to buy something you can hand down to your grandkid some day.Originally posted by zipdoa

Look for used boots on kijiji, plenty of people buy them solely for the stampede and never use them again.Originally posted by jwslam

Yes they are for your safety, but there are many jobs that require a certain footwear or uniform. Companies can CHOOSE if they want to subsidize the cost of said uniform or not.
Remember, you have the choice to work there or not, if you don't want to abide to their dress code then move along.
P.S If this job is at Ranchmans or Cowboys, have fun........
And if it is Knoxvilles.. Make sure to not naturally throw up the middle finger to the manager!Originally posted by vengie

Some jobs require chicks to wear high heels, this one requires cowboy boots.
Is what it is.

Gator are my favourite, best thing about a well made boot using full leather is they will last forever. Get a resole done every few years and you will have the boots for 20-30 years or more!Originally posted by Masked Bandit

Glad to hear you enjoy the boots and the experience so much! We do have a large selection of discontinued boots and seconds that start around the $150-200 mark, but in stock boots start around $375.00. For something that is 100% leather, including the insole, outsole and lining, you really can't find anything better for the price.Originally posted by Masked Bandit

On a side note, its great to see so many people wearing boots here!

I have some from Alberta boot, probably about 8 years old now. I haven't exactly been easy on them, but they're holding up great!
Back on topic, if the job says you need them but you can't justify buying them, feel free to find a job that doesn't require them haha. It's absolutely reasonable for any employer to dictate uniform.
Really? There are so many wannabe Cowboys out there, especially in Calgary. Not my thing, dont own a pair.Originally posted by D'z Nutz

No pairs here, but if I needed them for work I'd buy them.
If it's the $$$ you're worried about I'd imagine places like Value Village have an ample supply.
