After the latest OS update, my 14 pro max is periodically draining like 20% of the batter my overnight. 2 of the last 3 nights it’s dropped ~20% while I’m sleeping, but the other night was normal and only dropped like 1%. Battery usage stats showing minimal background usage by apps (maybe 35min in aggregate). Battery usage graph is just a steady drain all night.

    Any ideas?

Taking a lot of pictures / videos?

Probably syncing your photos at night.

Might not show up as an app because it’s iCloud/system

That said, 14 is probably starting to get to the point where a new battery wouldn’t hurt

No pics. Battery health at 91%. It’s just weird since it’s intermittent. Some nights it doesn’t use any power while idling. And also the fact that it was an immediate start, didn’t gradually get worse.

    Technology is frustrating sometimes.

What’s the word on the Apple Vision thing? I don’t know too much about it and didn’t bother looking into it since it’s not available in Canada. But I am currently in California and I got to thinking now would be a good time to pick one up and bring it back but I am struggling to find a use for it and at $3500USD for the cheapest version, not sure sure if it’s worth it.

You need to be on US Apple ID to use it.

My boss has it. It’s kinda cool but he got bored of it quickly. It’s a first gen product really designed for people looking for ideas to develop on the platform. It does some cool stuff but not $4k cool.

Ah that’s interesting and good to know. Saved me a chunk of cash I guess.

iOS 18 will be released to the public on Monday, September 16

Apple will also extend its popular Activation Lock feature to iPhone parts in order to deter stolen iPhones from being disassembled for parts. Requested by customers and law enforcement officials, the feature was designed to limit iPhone theft by blocking a lost or stolen iPhone from being reactivated. If a device under repair detects that a supported part was obtained from another device with Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled, calibration capabilities for that part will be restricted.

Right, theft is the problem, not lowering iphone sales.

How soon before iPhones disown older models from iOS upgrades to push for earlier upgrades?

Like this is the 1st time in a long time where 4-5 gens of iPhones that works pretty much the same, there is no incentive to upgrade.

Vaporware at launch of 16. Won't be surprised 17 will be out by the time they figure out all the bugs.

Other than USB C port, iphone 16 is basically 13 with slight proc upgrade. And Qualcomm has caught up on raw power of A processors after poaching the team that designed it for Apple.

I don't think the new camera button is going to attract mainstream users. Most don't care.

USB-c is such a major downgrade from lightning (from a physical connector perspective. I don’t really care about the data transfer rates and stuff).

I have a 13 Pro and 15 Pro in the family, and a 16 Pro coming for me. There's incremental upgrades on the camera gear from the 13. The vacation videos coming from the 13 Pro looks closer to 1080p than 4K on a big screen compared to the 15 Pro. The sharpness is quite dramatic.

Qualcomm is def catching up fast, those Snapdragon Windows laptops are pretty decent, if you can live with the Windows 11 shitshow. I helped set one up a few weeks ago.

As someone that uses my iPhone a ton for videos and photos, I'm curiously optimistic about the camera button. Natural position for landscape mode will hopefully force ppl to shoot properly haha.

I disagree as C has a much higher power capability and seems a lot more durable on the devices my kids abuse. Plus now on my iPhone 15 it seems easier to plugin without much effort.

C has its benefits. I’ve never thought my phone charges too slow though. And every usb-c device I’ve had, the connector gets wiggly and loose eventually. Lightning ports are always the same on year 4 as they are on day 1. I suppose this is just a ymmv.

The ultimate test will be after 1-2 years of use if I need to clean the port out like I always did with lightning.

If USB C still charges without needing a cleaning 2 years in... its the winner

I've been wireless charging my Iphone 15 Pro Max 99% of the time since day one so durability of USB-C is not that important to me.
Battery health is still 100% with 212 cycle count. I have my phone set to 80% limit.

I'm questioning this battery health report though as even watching 15-20min video, my battery goes down around 70%

From what I saw, it's only worth upgrading to 16P if your 13P battery life is in the shit.

Also, Nokia phones did that camera button decades ago haha. Oh man, I miss Windows Phone
