16 for me. I will more than likely maintain the 1. To me its worth the $100 every 5 years.
I got my 7 on my 14th birthday, my 5 on 16th birthday, off GDL on my 18th birthday and a week after that I got my 1. I just got my 6 this summer.
Funny thing, when I moved to SK they still have the airbrake endorsement for a class 1 right on the license, but because the Alberta license only had the 1 then they put that on the SK license. Then I got accused of having a fake license because "why would you have the 1 without the A. It should be a 1A if it was a real license".

56
Class 56, still on GDL. See no reason to get rid of the GDL.
No idea what GDL is, didn't have that when I moved to AB and transferred license from ONT back in 93. My original license was from SK, 5 with the M motorbike endorsement, which became a 56 in AB, and just rolled with that ever since.
GDL is a graduated licensing system where you have special provisions once you get your "full license" for a certain period of time to prove you're a safe driver. Nearly all of the Provinces have their own versions of it, some require a secondary test at the end of the GDL term in order to get off of it, others don't. Alberta requires you take a second test then reclass your license. Some people choose to stay on GDL because they don't want to pay the money, which is fine if you intend to stay a class 5 driver, but if you want to upgrade to a 1, 2, 3, or 4 you need to be off of it.Originally posted by Gman.45
