Yep, ive got very little tying me down here and it would be a good excuse to move to a nicer climate.
fair enough but i'm genuinely curious on your reasoning.

is it because of the debt that you don't want your city to take on? or that you don't want to live with citizens that you feel stupidly voted for it? or you just don't want to deal with the additional craziness in the city that the Olympics would bring?

I honestly think it will make the city worse to live in. The potential debt, amount of people that are going to be coming here, lack of real “new” facilities in the budget, potential for more bullshit spending that “makes the city better to live in for everyone”, and potential for security threats all weigh in on how I feel about it.

I was once a high performance athlete with dreams of the Olympics, and after being through that and seeing tons of people I know and trained with on their journey to go to the Olympics or not, I don’t want any part of it again.

Is there any value in having calgary back on the world stage? Any chance this could help reignite investment here?

I would need to see a pretty good arguement that this will help us get some resource development before i ever considered voting yes.

If we get Fed and Provincial money to put it towards Calgary Next, I will vote YES. As it is, probably not. There not enough benefits for the cost.

Considering the provincial government didn't want to put money towards an Edmonton bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, do you really think they will support the Olympics that will cost significantly more? I think that was just over a year ago the NDP said they wouldn't financially support Edmonton so not sure how much their opinion has changed on that type of event. Granted they will hopefully not be in power much longer so you never know. lol

I lived in Calgary for the 88 Olympics and remember enjoying it alot even though even though I didn't go to that many events (I was 12). I would definitely like to see this happen if it makes sense. Problem is the games have grown significantly bigger over the years than Calgary has grown so it definitely wouldn't be an easy task.

We couldn't go to any of the 88 Olympics events as we were poor living in Falconridge, but the Olympics was a financial boon for our family, as we had the one and only 1 hour photo stand right at COP, with our store a 10 minute drive away in Varsity so we just drove orders back and forth. Parents made a killing. We moved out of Falconridge to Varsity 6 months later haha. Thanks Olympics.

Hey, Nenshi's finally concerned about something Olympics related!

Shame what he was concerned about was the truth being made available to Calgary residents.

So the City had additional cost information that they weren't going to release to the public before the vote? That clown needs to go. His big concern is that someone leaked pertinent info so the public could make a more informed decision?

I believe their argument was: "if competing cities know our numbers, they can outbid us. It's just a coincidence that this also means we need to misinform our own residents."

I dunno, The city was banking on the province kicking in 1 Billion + for the olympics. Provice is only willing to put in $700 million. That is a pretty large funding shortfall to make up. gives me some hope that it isn't going to happen.

Between what the city was expecting and what the Alberta government offered, it seems awfully familiar.

“The government of Alberta will not be able to provide any additional funds that may be required, including those to cover revenue shortfalls or cost overruns,” he wrote.
Almosy every single, recent games, have doubled the final cost estimate. The city will be on the hook for billions.

No just seems like the logical answer, far too many unknowns, far too many secrets.
    Will fuck off, again.
