Maybe I'm missing something here but it looks like they voted to basically send it to a study. I don't see anywhere that says it's a "go" in any way until at least next year where they have to again vote.
The study is to determine 30 or 40, and which roads and implement. For all intents and purposes it’s a go.

That is how the city works best. Knee jerk reaction with their own made up ideas on what to do and then study it later
City council is full of traffic engineers apparently.

So the police chief says CPS will need extra resources to enforce these limits, which I take as a tacit admission they aren't enforcing the current 50 limit.

Nah, he will say whatever he needs to get more hires is all.

Maybe I'm being cynical, but I just see the "study" as a way to distract the general public and quiet the complainers while they prepare to push through 30km/h for all neighborhoods regardless of what the outcome of the study will be. If they relied on facts to make sound decisions, this idea would have never been suggested in the first place.

Going to need more resources as people will be doing 10 under in a zone and people will be passing legally on a 2 lane road without markings lol.

It would be a colossal waste of time and energy trying to convince these people that 30km/h is unnecessary. You can't reason with this level of stupidity.

They're just reusing the school zone to playground zone playbook.

    1. Let roads department handle study on what to do.
    2. Roads department changes everything to 30km/h
    3. Nenshi pretends to be pissed, gives roads department shit, says it's too late and can't go back now.
    4. Pats roads department on the back, never talk about it again

Pretty much, again this makes me wonder if the provincial government could pull back power levels and put t back under the transportation department.

Anyone know how to get this table in a sortable format for me?
I'm no Traffic Analyst or City Counsellor but...
Basically, show only "no injury" and "minor injury" locations, see what it looks like. There's your study right there.... minor and no injury... speed is fine as the person lived.

Then focus attention on area where there's major pedestrian injury data >2. Having a 1 time incident is basically deemed "accident" and perfect storm of factors. 2 people, it starts the idea that something is wrong here. over 2, I would argue, there's an issue with lighting or signals or speed too close to where people tend to cross the road.

That is precisely what happened with the 12th ave bike lane. Call it a "test period" with no intention whatsoever to do anything other than keep it, regardless of the facts.

I imagine it's also the exact same strategy used to get the Playground Zones pushed to 9pm.

Thanks. I'll mess with the data see if I can get something.
Seemed too easy, tried the fusiontable but the filers are compounding so it didn't project what I wanted to see properly.

It’s annoying that there’s no recent data. CPS removed downloads for yearly raw data after that compilation was released. We used to be able to grab data for every crime reported yearly.

Will need more officers to police the lower speed limits now.

Raise taxes, hire more traffic cops, hand out more tickets, increase revenue.

Alright, I've sliced up the data in Excel. I can send it to whomever wants to review it or criticize the logic.
Feel free to pick apart my assumptions for filtering and I can adjust. If it's actually taking off, I can spend more time and make the data look nicer like the guy's original one...

Flitered to include: All Death accidents, Major accidents >=2, Minor accidents >=3, No injury and Unknown are removed.
Intersections where a death and major accident were counted are only counted once. Arrived at 287 locations of interest.

Just scrolling the data though, most sites are major roads. Richmond Rd has 4 intersections of interest along it. Macleod Tr has 9.
You start combing it down to locations that are residential and I bet you get to under 50 sites. Pretty weak for a blanketing of speed changes.

One could argue what about the 1 minor accident here and there? Well, targeting those is like trying to predict the next B&E or Murder. Might as well get a Pre-Cog from Minority Report to start working.

    https://www.google.com/fusiontables/...FTv5QbApDgY7nl

Future changes: Could review intersections where speed is currently 70km/h or above and that would remove most markers as it's a lowering of speed limit from 50km/h to 30 or 40 km/h.
Add more detail and titles to take it further and prove it's a cash grab within residential areas and not a safety item.
