I am in the process of completely redoing all of my yard and when I was telling a buddy of mine about all the labour intensive shit I have to do but don't want to do. He told me his kids (15 and 14) were actively looking for odd jobs to earn some extra money and they would probably be very happy to help.
We just got 10 yards of 40mm rock delivered and I gave them a call to see if thats something they wanted to do and they were all over it. It felt good to see how eager these kids were to do some manual work and earn their money. Their dad brought them over and I walked through the project with them as if they were contrators I was hiring; laid out the scope, walked the job, and discussed payment. Very mature kids and I love to see that willingness to work. I know there is probably no way my siblings and I could have got along to do something like this as kids but they seem to cooperate very well.
They are out there right now busting their ass. Its a good day.

How much did you pay them? I was thinking of doing the same with my neighbors kids as I've got a similar amount of 20mm rock to move as well.

I told them $15/hour (their dad's suggestion) plus I'll give them all the water and gatorade they can drink and feed them lunch. That being said I fully intend to base it more on $20/hr and round up as its not easy work. So if they take 7 hours to do it that would be $105 each at the agreed rate but I'll give them $150 per kid. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
My front yard was all shitty playground gravel before and if I couldn't have found a bobcat I was fully prepared to hire a bunch of kids to shovel it all at a similar rate.

Very generally speaking, millennials are the worst workers we've hired. Gen Z and younger are much better.
Good stuff, hiring kids is a public service for that stuff. Gotta train the next generation.

We'll have to start calling you Lucky Pierre.
I also enjoy the Burger King drive-thru forgetting to take my coupons 100% of the time.
How many Burger Kings remain though? I can only think of Shawnessy location as that was my neck of the woods. I think there is one near Mcknight and Barlow as well. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I wanna guess like 8 BK's. Maybe more if you count Airdrie and Okotoks.
Update, kids crushed it today. Ended up taking them 8.5 hours but they busted their ass all day. I had 3 neighbours stop by after (when I was out there being particular and raking) to comment on how hard they worked. Money well spent in my books. Their parents raised good kids. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I volunteer at a bike shop and in the spring we had a 14 year old kid ask us if he could join us as part of a school project. (Project was about getting out of his comfort zone and he decided learning how to interact with people was what he was going to do, it just so happened he decided to do it at our shop.) First day he was already jumping in to help and getting his hands dirty and being a huge help around the shop. Even after he finished his project and school had ended, he's still coming around to help out cause he's enjoying it so much. We have another kid around the same age and while I haven't interacted with him much, the volunteers who do say he's just as sharp and helpful as the kid I was mentoring. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. These two kids who have only been around for the last few months have put in more work and effort than some of the 20/30-something's that have been around for a year.
Thats amazing, I love to hear that! Thanks for sharing that story. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
It seems like there is this funny grouping of like 20-30 year olds who are super entitled and spend all day bitching and moaning looking for hand outs because "they deserve it". Then we have the 12-18 year olds who, by my interaction and stories like this, are more than happy to get their hands dirty and earn their wage. I was talking to my landscaper today and he said in the last few years he would take highschool kids over college kids any day of the week because all of the 15-16 year olds he has hired work twice as hard as the 21-22 year olds. The college kids all expect to make $25-30/hr when their only experience was helping their dad lay sod once and the highschool kids are just happy to make their own money.
Now this obviously doesn't apply to everyone as there are young lazy fucks and 20 year olds who bust their ass, but its super nice to hear stories about younger kids who have a good work ethic. That will take them far in life.
